Heritage Conference Spring Sports Media Day ~ Northern Cambria

Skyler Eckenrode ~ Baseball Coach, Northern Cambria Roster
Coming off last year’s Heritage Conference title, I’m sure there will be plenty of people who understandably expect a weaker Colts squad this season, especially after graduating 10 seniors. This year’s team is ready for the challenge that comes with defending a title, and I expect them to be ready to do so when we take the field March 17th against Homer Center. The pitching staff returns 4 major contributing arms from years past with Reese Wagner, Levi Czar, Brady Hoover, and Zak Kirsch. If you throw strikes in high school baseball, a lot can go right, and with these 4, supplemented by Zach Cavallo and Connur Solley, our pitching staff will still be one of the better in the conference. The offense might not have the same level of pop as last year, but there are many ways to be a good offensive team. I think this team has plenty of fight in the batter’s box to make for tough outs. Kirsch, Czar, Wagner, Cavallo, Hoover, Parker Shutty and Braden Bougher have experience in big games and put in a lot of work this offseason, from the weight room to the field, in an effort to play again under the lights in May for shot to repeat.

Kandi McCabe ~ Softball Coach, Northern Cambria
Our girls have been working very hard in the off season to improve themselves as well as their team. We are hoping their hard work pays off as we go through our season this year. The Heritage is such a tough conference with many very good teams so our girls are going to have to work just as hard and prove what kind of talent they have. We have challenged our girls this year and are hoping they can rise to that challenge and see that hard work does pay off. We only lost 2 seniors last year and we only have 2 seniors this year, so our team will be young, but full of talent. We have a few freshmen that are going to make a big impact on our team this year. Our pitching should be strong as well as they have been working very hard in the off season on a weekly basis. Hitting will be key for us this year.

For the first time in my 6 years we have a roster of over 30 kids. We have a good mix of some very experienced returners coming back and some young/new athletes who will be able to grow and help out the team this year. As far as returning student-athletes, we return Junior Daniel Farrell who is the defending district champion in the triple jump. He also placed 3rd at the state track meet last season. As well as Junior Tommy Costello and Senior Parker Shutty who placed 4th and 5th respectively in the Javelin at Districts last season. Junior Levi Czar will be back hoping to make a run at the finals at districts in the 100m as well as part of the 4x100m relay with teammates Zak Kirsch, Daniel Farrell, and Colton Brawley. An outlook on our season is that we are going to be very competitive. We will need some young guys such as sophomores Nick Arotin and Dylan Bodek, and freshmen Colten Brawley, Simon Meese, and Wesley Vella to grow and get better as the season goes. Along with those young guys we need to bring along some newer guys to the sport. Juniors Zak Kirsch, Joey Buterbaugh, Braydon Lamont, and Jude Dumm will have to also have to grow and step up if we want to compete for a conference title this season.
