Taxes remain the same at 1.3 mils, with the budget balancing at $2026.90.  Supervisors President Matt Housholder talked about why they wanted to get the budget out of the way earlier than normal.

Housholder added that the biggest expense is road work, followed by salaries.

The first incident was a brush fire that was reported at 12:47 p.m. for a location along Route 403 North in Pine Township. Pine and Cherryhill fire departments were initially dispatched, with Clymer and Nicktown crews sent to assist at 1:28.

A vehicle fire was then called in at 1:39 p.m. on Bedick Road in Conemaugh Township. Tunnelton and Saltsburg departments were sent to the scene. Just one minute later, crews from Islen/ West Lebanon fire department were called to assist.

Twenty two minutes later, the second brush fire was reported on Town Road in Clearfield County. Glen Campbell fire department was called out.

A pumping detail was also reported at 2 p.m. on Philadelphia Street in Indiana Borough. Indiana Fire Association members responded.

Indiana County 911 sent the Blairsville and Black Lick fire departments, State Police and Citizen’s Ambulance to Route 22 at the intersection with Socialville Lane and Villa Road.  Fire officials said that there were two vehicles involved and one took on severe damage.

The day started at 1:07 AM with a miscellaneous call on West Philadelphia Street Extension in East Wheatfield Township.  Armagh Firefighters were called out to help EMTs on the scene.  A minute later, Saltsburg and Tunnelton firefighters were sent to Clark Street in Conemaugh Township for a tree fire.

The first of two vehicle crashes on the day was reported at 1:47 AM on McIntyre Road in Young Township.  State Police, Coal Run and Iselin firefighters and Murrysville EMS were sent to the scene.  The other crash was at 10:01 AM on Tower Hill Road in Pine Township.  Crews from the Pine Township and Nicktown fire departments, state police and Citizen’s Ambulance were on the scene.  For that crash, Pine Township also set up a landing zone for a medical helicopter.

The film got a standing ovation afterwards, and attendees liked the film for many different reasons.

The event also acted as a fundraiser as money was collected for Wreaths for Indiana County Veterans.

The movie will have another preview screening open to the public on Thursday at 6:30 PM and will be shown each day through November 12th.  The Jimmy Stewart Museum will have a special exhibit, “The Making of Jimmy”, featuring costumes used in the movie, props, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, quotes, fun facts, and more.  The museum’s gift shop also has new movie-themed merchandise.

Weimer wrote that the student displayed the knife for others who were waiting for their bus to arrive.  He says that at no time did the student threaten anyone – students or staff – and that before getting on the bus, the knife was discarded near a tree.

Weimer writes that there was no indication that the student meant to harm anyone and the district is addressing the incident according to its policies and procedures.  He encourages parents and guardians  to remind their children that knives or any other potentially dangerous items should never be brought to school, school bus stops, or to school-related activities.

United’s board will hold a work session on Tuesday.  Penns Manor’s board will hold a committee meeting on Wednesday.  Homer-Center’s school board will hold a planning meeting on Thursday.

In addition to the bridge at 4^th & Church, the other bridges in the project are on Maple Street, Locust Street, School Street, and 7^th Street.  All of the bridges are over Marsh Run.

The project began in July with a targeted completion date by the end of November.

When the operational staff begins coming on board, they will be working with two of the seven gas turbines that will be the first to come online and produce electricity, while the installation of the other five is being completed.  IHI Power Services, which last summer became Kyuden Energy Partners Corporation (KEPC), will operate the plant.

The “Red Carpet Reception” is at 12:30, with invited guests asked to donate five dollars to the Wreaths for Indiana County Veterans Project, and an early access premiere of the movie at 1:30.  The screening is open only to those invited guests.

Indiana movie-goers will be able to enjoy the movie on Thursday, the day before the nationwide premiere, in a special showing at 6:30 PM, and it will be shown each day through November 12^th.

Two loads are scheduled tomorrow, one from the Armstrong terminal in Schenley to Blairsville, requiring the temporary closure of eastbound Route 22 three miles west of Blairsville.  The other load goes in the other direction, from the Homer City Energy Campus to Schenley.

Drivers can expect delays for both transports.

Indiana County 911 reported the crash at 8:31.  Indiana Fire Association and Borough Police were sent along with Citizen’s Ambulance.  Police chief Justin Schawl said two vehicles were involved, and the fire department was needed due to the amount of debris left by the cars.  No one was taken to the hospital.

For today, door-to-door trick Trick or Treating will be held in Blairsville from 2-4 this afternoon.  In Creekside, trick or treating begins immediately following its Halloween parade at 1:00 PM and will run until 3:00 PM.  Ernest’s times will run from 5-7.

Homer city will have a Halloween parade tonight as well.  Lineup for that parade will start at 5:30 at Intown Park and it will head towards the firehall.  Trick or treating for Homer City and Center Township will follow from 6-8 PM.  White Township and Indiana Borough trick-or-treating will be from 6-8 as well.

In Marion Center, there will be an all-day Halloween bash with a parade at 1:00 PM starting at the Y, with lineup starting shortly before that at the metal building parking lot.  Halloween party will follow from 2-5 at the park hall with food trucks, free popcorn, a free pumpkin for every child, and fire trucks and local vendors.  Door-to-door trick-or-treating will run from 5-7 tonight.

Police said in a post on Facebook that 17-year-old Annalyse Findley ran away from the Blairsville area around 1:45 PM on October 30^th, 2026.  Her whereabouts are currently unknown.  She is described as five-feet-five inches tall, about 150 pounds with straight black hair.  She was last seen wearing a black tank-top, leopard print sweatpants, and UGG platform shoes.

In a statement issued to the community on Friday, police said that the Halloween weekend has traditionally kept police busy and they expect this year to be “vibrant and active” once again.  There will be an increased police presence in town, with a look and feel like other high-activity weekends throughout the year.  As of right now, there are no emergencies to report, but they will always provide people with the information needed should one arise.

On top of careful driving, police advise that if you see something suspicious, report it to them.

The program is an evidence-based initiative that will help law enforcement identify victims of domestic violence who may be at heightened risk of death and connect them with lifesaving resources and support.  When an individual is identified as being at elevated risk, troopers can facilitate an immediate connection with a local domestic violence advocate or hotline. That connection allows the victim to receive safety planning, advocacy, shelter referrals, and other available services.

State police Acting Commissioner Lt. Colonel George L. Bivens said the program’s implementation “signifies an important milestone in ensuring the LAP reaches each one of the 67 counties across (the) Commonwealth”.  PSP joins 493 other law enforcement agencies and 52 domestic violence programs that currently utilize the program in Pennsylvania.

The hearing for Ronald Weiss was scheduled before Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco this morning, but before the hearing, Weiss said something to his attorney, Taylor Malcom Johnson and presented him with a written request to step down as his attorney.

Peggy Bruzda, the wife of Barbara’s brother David, said that she was not surprised with what happened.

A new court-appointed attorney will be named after the paperwork is complete.  The new sentencing hearing is set for November 20^th at 8:30 AM.

Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco this morning ordered 25-year-old Issac Joel Buchkoski of Johnstown to serve 50 years to life in a state correctional institution along for his guilty plea to a charge of Murder in the Second Degree.  He will also serve up to 20 years each for charges of kidnapping to facilitate a felony, aggravated assault and conspiracy to those two crimes.  Those sentences will run consecutive to each other, but concurrent with the murder sentence.  Buchkoski pleaded guilty to those crimes in connection with Gareffa’s murder about three years ago.  He was one of a group of five that kidnapped Gareffa from his grandmother’s home on Route 403 in Buffington Township on October 20^th, 2022 and stabbed him.  His body was found two days later in an area of tall grass off Oneida Mine Road in Brush Valley Township.

Summer Settlemyer was given a similar sentence for her guilty pleas to the same crimes.  Another co-defendant, Taylyn Edwards, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to first degree murder and was ordered to serve life in prison without parole.  Cases remain active for Desean Alvarez, Mia Catalfano, Thomas Rivera and Jesse Lee Wadsworth.

On August 27^th, a jury convicted 78-year-old Ronald Weiss on charges of first-degree murder.  Today, Weiss returns to court for a sentencing hearing this morning in front of Indiana County President Judge Thomas Bianco.  He faces a mandatory life sentence.  Weiss was originally convicted in 1997 of first-degree murder in connection with the death of Barbara Bruzda in 1978.  She was last seen playing pool with her before leaving for a party in October of 1978 and she was found on March 20^th, 1979 in a ditch off a gravel road a few miles away from the party location and Weiss’ home.  Investigators said that he beat her with a tire iron.

The guilty verdict was overturned by federal court in 2018 over prosecutorial misconduct by the state attorney general’s prosecutor and a state trooper who testified at the trial.  The State Supreme Court subsequently ruled that Weiss could be retried because the crime and the prosecutorial misconduct were separate matters.

Troopers say between 4:12 and 4:27 AM, two unknown people stole various tools from parked trucks at the Shadco lot on Route 119 North.  The thieves got away with between $8000 and $10,000 worth of tools, and fled the scene in an SUV believed to be a gray Toyota RAV 4.

Police describe one suspect as a white man wearing a black face covering, a tan hooded jacket, blue jeans and tan boots.  The other suspect was described by troopers as a white man wearing a gray knit hat, a red bandana over his face, a black “North Face” branded shirt or jacket with a large logo on the back and smaller logo on the left front chest, blue jeans and white shoes.

The latest agreements are with Highlands Health Medical Center and Laurel Pediatrics Associates of Johnstown.  The agreements were signed in two ceremonies yesterday afternoon.  In a statement, Highlands Health Medical Center Executive Director Rosailie Danchanko called it a historic event, saying the facility “has a high percentage of patients who are facing a loss of their health insurance in January 2027. Through this partnership (they) we will have additional resources to serve the most vulnerable.”

Laurel Pediatrics Associates President Dr. Elaine Confer said this will present an amazing training opportunity for students in the IUP program and hopes “these future medical students will return to our community to practice medicine.”

So far, IUP has received 290% of the required clinical training agreements, far surpassing the 120% required for accreditation.  The school is expected to have its first class of students next fall.

T-Mobile announced today that in the East division, Homer-Center took fourth place, with 68,083 votes in the regional finals.  The winner in the division was Buffalo Gap High School in Swoope, Virginia, who had 195,656 votes cast.

Superintendent Ralph Cecere said in an interview last week after the school board meeting that not only did the T-Mobile contest help the district’s athletic facilities, but it also brought the community together.

Over the last three days, Homer-Center averaged 5,600 votes a day, and the district did receive 10,000 bonus votes for completing video projects.  The district will receive $25,000 to help with athletic programs for their participation in the contest.

Court documents showed a preliminary hearing is scheduled for Garth Anthony Delk, who turns 60 this week, is charged with a misdemeanor count of making terroristic threats and summary charges of disorderly conduct-fighting and public drunkenness for the incident on September 24^th.  Indiana Borough Police took him into custody that day during a public disturbance in the 300 block of Philadelphia Street.  Welk had active arrest warrants out on him at the time.

The first accident was reported on Coal Run Road in Center Township at 6:23 AM.  Black Lick, Homer City and Coral-Graceton fire departments were sent out along with State Police.  The second was at 4:18 PM on Sherman Street in Clymer Borough.  Clymer Fire and Police departments were dispatched along with Citizen’s Ambulance.

Over the last seven days, the PA Department of Health reported 85 new cases of measles reported, bringing the year-to-date total for the state to 1,398.  The department also reported 265 people have been hospitalized and five measles-related deaths have been reported.

This year so far, Indiana County has seen 48 cases of measles.  Comparing Indiana County to the surrounding area, Jefferson County has 87 cases, Clearfield has 49 cases, Cambria has 6, Armstrong has 3 and Westmoreland County has two.  Lancaster County has the highest number of measles cases in the state with 487.  The nearest to that was Mifflin County with 198.

Supervisors agreed to send current draft of the proposed Recreation Vehicle Camp Ground Ordinance, which would set rules in place for rv-park style communities. This is in response to the recent increase in mobile home developments in the township due to the project at the Homer City Energy Campus.

The township planning commission approved the draft at their October 13^th meeting. Township Manager Chris Anderson talks about the next steps for the ordinance.

Supervisors also approved sending their official Township Map Update to the county for review. The map ties in with the township’s comprehensive plan, and includes a “wishlist” of projects that township residents would like to see done.

Anderson says that the map will help them secure grant funding for said projects.

Officials say that an unknown male suspect obtained credit card information from the victim at an unknown date. On September 23^rd at 3:16 p.m., the suspect used that information to purchase $283.97 of goods from the Home Depot in Altoona.

Lana Ratay with the Indiana County Citizens Coalition was voicing remarks against the Indiana County Municipal Emergency Services Authority when she went over her allotted three minutes.  After repeated requests from Mike Keith to wrap up, Ratay was escorted out of the meeting room by Sheriff Bob Fyock and one of his deputies.  Keith said that the three minute time limit in place as a sign of respect to allow everyone to speak.

During the voting portion of the meeting, the Commissioners approved a contract with 4Ward Planning to complete the Housing Plan Update and Land Bank feasibility study at a cost of $75,000 to be paid with CDBG funds.  Also, the Commissioners were presented with a commemorative piece of Pennsylvania slate engraved with a picture of the old courthouse as a token of appreciation for the roof replacement project.

Edwards Moving and Rigging says that the first delivery today will be the wrap up of a superload that started yesterday and ended at a staging area on Route 119 last night.  The trip resumes at 9:00 AM, going along Campbell’s Mills Road and Black Lick Road before turning off onto Power Plant Road.  The first portion of Campbells Mill Road near US 119 will be temporarily closed to accommodate the convoy.

The second delivery will be a significantly lighter trailer will depart at 9:00 this morning from the Schenley Docks in Armstrong County and is expected to arrive at the Homer City Energy Campus by the end of the day today.

People are advised to expect delays, use caution, and allow additional travel time along the transport routes. Follow directions from police and traffic control personnel, and give the crews plenty of room to travel.

The rate went up from 3.2%in August to 4.1 last month, an increase of nearly a full percentage point.  That’s still lower than where the county’s unemployment rate was last year at this time, where it was 5.4%.  Pennsylvania’s unemployment for September is at 3.6% and the national rate is 4.2%.

Westmoreland County’s rate is the lowest in the region at 3.5.  Jefferson and Clearfield’s rate is at 3.9, Armstrong and Cambria are tied with Indiana at 4.1, which marks the highest for the region.  The lowest unemployment rate is 2.7 in Montour County, while the highest is Cameron at 5.4%

Indiana County’s civilian labor force, which is the number of people working or looking for work went up by 400 to 36,300.  The number of unemployed went up by the same amount to 1500 while the number of those employed went up by 200 to 34,900.

Act 89 of 2026 increases the required stopping distance for school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended from 10 feet to 15 feet.  The bill also provides for harsher penalties for repeat offenders and expands school bus safety education by assigning new responsibilities to PennDOT and school districts.

The bill had unanimously passed the State Senate and was approved by an overwhelming majority of the state house.  Both State Representatives Jim Struzzi and Brian Smtih approved the bill.  The new requirements and punishments will go into effect in October of next year.

Interim Senior Associate Dean of Operations and Founding Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs and Graduate Medical Education Dr. Ryan Smith was named a representative to the AOA’s Psychiatry Residency Review Committee for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.  The panel will evaluate, monitor and accredit adult, child and adolescent psychiatry residency and fellowship training programs in the United States.

Dr. Smith currently serves on the AOA Bureau of Osteopathic Education and on the Test Accommodations Committee for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners. 

One of the people who spoke during public comment was Emma DePrimio, a River Valley Sophomore and class president who said that she and other members of her class worked hard to raise funds and kept rigorous records of the money they received.  She had asked the Director of Finance and Operations Jonathan Santoro to provide a record of what they had in their account, and while her records showed the account had over $4000, Santoro said they had around $850, and has not provided her with the spreadsheet for withdrawals and deposits.  She felt at first she had done something wrong, but when she heard that money from student accounts was used to meet payroll needs, she was shocked.

Board President Rick Harper after the meeting said that any money taken from any student accounts has been replaced.

That confirmation could come in a few days.

In other business, the board approved naming Melanie Pantalone and Ed Dalton to the Citizen Finance Committee.  The committee’s goal is to provide community members with an opportunity to review, understand, and provide input on the district’s financial operations, budgeting practices, long term financial planning, and responsible use of taxpayer resources.

The application for the ballot must be in by 4:00 PM today at the Indiana County Voter Registration office at the Indiana County Courthouse.  This goes for those needing an absentee ballot or a mail-in ballot.  In order to get either ballot, you must be registered to vote.

The utility company announced it has applied another $7.10 credit to customers water bills as part of the settlement with manufacturers of per- and polyfluroalkyl substances, better known as PFAS.  The credit now brings the total settlement funds up to $44 per customer.

According to a statement, this follows previous PFAS settlement credits and reflects Pennsylvania American Water’s commitment to returning settlement proceeds directly to customers. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approved the company’s PFAS Litigation Universal Credit Rider, which allows the company to provide the settlement proceeds to customers. The company remains in compliance with all PFAS drinking water standards and has completed PFAS treatment upgrades in several communities. Borough Police say 23-year-old Nathan Semsick is facing charges of aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI, two counts of DUI and summary traffic offenses for his part in the incident on June 5^th at the intersection of 4^th and Philadelphia Street before the current four-way-red patterns were put in place.  Police determined that Semsick was behind the wheel of the car that hit a 62-year-old man who was hit in the crosswalk while the pedestrian walk sign was lit.  The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and while he is out of the hospital, he continues to recover.  Semsick was determined to be under the influence of alcohol and a controlled substance.

An arraignment hearing was held October 23^rd, and bond was set at $50,000.  A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 AM on November 5^th.

Parents were worried about behaviors students at East Pike were exhibiting, including using vulgar language, throwing chairs and violence towards teachers and children.  In a statement issued on Monday, and read during the meeting, Superintendent Heinrich said that they have made the situation a priority and “have taken several steps to strengthen our response and provide additional support at East Pike,” including realigning resources to increase emotional support services to provide proactive behavioral interventions and for behavioral responses.  The central administration will also have an increased presence to observe and assist, along with identify areas that need adjustments.  Heinrich added in his statement that they are establishing a reporting process to help identify issues and engaged ARIN’s TaC Team to make additional training, coaching and support available to the staff.

Heinrich said after the meeting that it’s not going to be an instantaneous fix.

Another effort was announced by board member Eric Brocious, the chair of the Academic/Extracirricular Activity committee.  He announced that the administration will provide the committee monthly reports on the progress on all buildings on these issues.

East Pike Behavioral Response Presentation for the 10-26-26 Board meeting

One transport will bring a smaller load from the Schenley Docks to the property on Power Plant Road, and is expected to take one day to make the trip.  The other transport is hauling the empty trailer back to Schenley Docks, and that is also expected to take one day.

Police confirmed a passenger vehicle was going West on Route 22 while the large commercial truck was coming east.  For an unknown reason, the passenger vehicle went across the concrete median and collided head-on with the truck.  Both vehicles ended up in the S&T Bank parking lot in Resort Plaza, with the truck hitting four parked vehicles.  The driver of the passenger vehicle, identified by police as an 18-year-old woman, was flown to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center for treatment.

The first was a fire in Jefferson County at 4:14 PM on Lost Lane in Bell Township.  Rossiter fire department joined seven other departments in fighting the fire.  No word yet on the cause of the fire or how much damage was done.

Pennsylvania has proposed spending $19 million to accelerate well plugging efforts of the state’s estimated 700,000 abandoned oil and gas wells, “many of which leak methane, threaten water quality, and pose ongoing public health and environmental risks,” according to the event’s organizers.

Union Energy’s partners include the Pennsylvania chapters of the AFL-CIO, the Building and Construction Trades Council, the Climate Jobs National Resource Center, Cornell University.  Its 2026 Four-County Initiative prioritizes Delaware, Lancaster, Indiana, and Westmoreland counties in Pennsylvania.

In Indiana Borough, the leaf vacuum will make the rounds through each neighborhood on the day after normal trash collection.  Leaves should be raked into piles between the curb and sidewalk, but not into the street.  They should not be bagged and you should keep them away from fire hydrants, poles, and parked cars.  Only leaves will be collected, not sticks, limbs, grass, or garden materials.

In White Township, leaf collection will be five consecutive Mondays through November 23^rd.  The leaves should be placed in the required paper bags and set at curbside or the ditch line on public roadways by 7 AM on collection day.

Bags must weigh fifty pounds or less.  Leaves in plastic bags or loose piles, bags left in driveways off the roadway right-of-way, and grass clippings, branches, brush, or garden waste will not be collected.

The vote by the PUC board was 3-2.  Instead of adopting FirstEnergy’s request, the PUC approved an expedited review of auto-renewals, ordering its Office of Competitive Market Oversight to report back by June 1^st of next year.

The entrance to the IASA, to the left of the hospital’s main entrance, will remain open and patient drop-off will not be affected.  However, the area directly in front of the building is temporarily blocked off.  The road in front of the entrance is normally one-way, but is temporarily two-way, allowing vehicles to loop around in order to exit parking lots A and B.

The free IRMC Courtesy Shuttle will continue to operate Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3:20 PM.

Indiana County 911 reported the crash at 9:43 AM and sent the Blairsville and Black Lick fire departments, state police and Citizen’s Ambulance to the intersection of 22 and Resort Drive.  Unconfirmed reports say that a car was going west on 22 and was turning into Plaza Drive when it was hit by a coal truck headed east.  The two cars went off the road and into the S&T Bank parking lot, with the car catching fire and the truck crashing into some parked cars.

Court documents say 22-year-old Summer Settlemyer pleaded guilty to a count of aggravated harassment by a prisoner for an incident on May 26^th of this year.  Charges of aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner and obstruction of justice were not prosecuted as part of the plea agreement.  She was ordered to serve six months to two years in a state correctional institution.

The Downtown Indiana business district is teaming up with the Indiana Kiwanis club to celebrate Halloween this week with a parade that will start at the Indiana Fire Association Station on 5^th and Philadelphia Street and make its way uptown.  Participants are advised to arrive between 8:45 and 9:20 this morning, with the lineup at 9:20 and the parade stepping off at 9:30.  Everyone is welcome to take part in the parade.  After the parade, there will be trick or treating at several Downtown Indiana businesses, along with some businesses that will set up trick-or-treat stops at IRMC park.  That will run from 10 AM to Noon.  People are advised to be on the lookout for increased pedestrian traffic during that time.

The gift of $338,682 will go to the program that provides loan forgiveness for up to 85% of the loans borrowed through the program for students in the master’s and doctoral nursing programs who commit to serving as a nursing educator at any accredited school of nursing or as a clinical educator at an accredited health facility for four years.  This marks the third year that IUP has received funding for the program.

In a statement, IUP Department of Nursing professor and Doctoral program coordinator said that the program will help fill a shortage of nurses and nursing faculty.  She added that “Funding from the NFLP grant provides the financial support for nurses to complete their advanced education and our graduates are prepared to fill these faculty roles.”

UPDATE: 

At least one person was hurt in a crash this morning in Burrell Township.

The accident was reported at 9:43 this morning on Route 22 at the Intersection of Route 22 and Resort Drive.  Unconfirmed reports said a car going west on 22 was making a left turn onto Resort Drive when it was hit by a coal truck headed eastbound.  The impact forced both cars into the S&T Bank parking lot.  The coal truck hit parked cars in the lot and the car caught fire as well.  Fire extinguishers were used to put the fire out.

State police accident reconstruction and motor carrier teams were on the scene to investigate while Blairsville and Black Lick Fire Departments and the Blairsville Municipal Authority assisted with safety efforts.  Eastbound traffic was diverted for three hours around the scene.

State police say they will release more information when appropriate.

WHAT WAS FIRST REPORTED

Several vehicles were involved in an accident this morning in Burrell Township.

Indiana County 911 reported the incident at 9:43 a.m. for a location on Route 22 West. Initial reports indicate that multiple vehicles were involved in the incident near the S&T Bank, including a dump truck.

Overman identified the victim as 56-year-old Robert David Schooley of Coral.

Officials say that the incident took place at 6:13 a.m. at the intersection of 119 and Lucerne Road, near the Sheetz in Center Township. Upon arrival, troopers learned that Schooley was going East across the highway on an electric bicycle, when a Ford F-350 driven by a 52-year-old man from New Alexandria, was going North on 119. For unknown reasons, Schooley went into the path of the truck and was killed.

Officials note that the driver of the truck did have a steady green signal at the time of the accident.

Starting at 9:00 AM, another oversized and overweight piece of equipment will head out from the Schenley Docks and take Route 66 through Leechburg and Apollo to Delmont then to Route 22.  It will pull off near the Westmoreland/Indiana County Line near Blairsville at 5:00 PM to install additional equipment as needed to continue to transport into Indiana County.  Route 22 East from three miles west of Blairsville to US 119, will be closed from 7:00 p.m. until midnight tonight.  The run is expected to resume tomorrow morning as it makes its way to the energy campus.

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees identified the victim as 20-year-old Daniel Clark.  He was riding his motorcycle along Cardiff Road in Nanty-Glo when he hit a deer and was thrown from the bike.  Emergency officials said Clark was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and died en route from the accident scene to a landing zone.

Court documents show 22-year-old Summer Settlemyer is scheduled for a sentencing hearing today in a different case.  In this one, she is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated harassment by a prisoner and assaulting a prison facility employee for an incident on May 26^th of this year.

One of the topics covered was the increasing cost of diesel fuel.  The district does have a locked-in rate for this year at $2.80 a gallon before prices skyrocketed.  Those costs are being mitigated as the district does have three out of the five 72-passenger buses powered by propane, which is significantly cheaper.  Superintendent Ralph Cecere says they may consider switching more buses over to propoane.

State police in Indiana say the body of 81-year-old Terrill A. Brewer was found in a wooded area around 9 o’clock this morning following a multi-agency search within Creekside Borough and the surrounding area.

Troopers ruled her death accidental and foul play is not suspected.

Brewer allegedly left her home on foot and never returned, prompting a family member to report her missing.

On November 5^th, one day before the film premieres nationwide, “Jimmy” will be shown at the Tuxedo Cinemas at the Indiana Mall at 6:30.  In an interview on Indiana in the Morning this morning, Laura Herrington with the Indiana County Tourist Bureau said they are happy that Stewart’s family is pleased with the film.

The movie stars KJ Apa as Jimmy Stewart and follows his career as he moved from Hollywood actor to the Army Air Corps in World War II, and how it impacted his life after he returned home.

The Indiana County Tourist Bureau will have a special giveaway for attendees to the Thursday showing.  Tuxedo Cinemas and the Indiana Mall are also planning on ways to make the evening special.  That information is expected to be released soon.

Indiana County 911 sent the Homer City Fire Department, State Police and Citizen’s Ambulance to the intersection of Route 119 and Lucerne Road at 6:13 AM.  State Police Public Information Officer Trooper Cliff Greenfield confirmed that the crash involved a bicyclist and someone driving a pickup truck, and that the bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.  The identity of the victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The driver of the truck remained on-scene to help with state police and he was taken to IRMC for an evaluation.  Greenfield said it’s believed he was not hurt in the crash.

Initial scanner reports say that a crash involving two pickup trucks and an SUV was reported around 7:13 AM near Martin’s General Store.  State police confirmed the vehicles involved, but had no other details available.  Injuries were reported at first but the number of people injured has not been confirmed.  That crash has already been cleared.

The first crash was reported at 6:13 this morning along Route 119 in Center Township.  Initial scanner reports say that the crash involved a vehicle and a bicycle at the intersection of Route 119 and Lucerne Road, and at least one person was injured.  Homer City Fire Department said on Facebook that Route 119 North at Lucerne Road is closed and will remain closed for an extended period of time.  No word yet on when it will reopen.

Homer City Fire Department is currently on scene along with State Police and Citizen’s Ambulance.  Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman, Jr. was also called to the scene.  Details have not been released.

PennDOT says that 119 North is closed between the Route 422 West Business exit and Tide Road.  It’s expected to reopen at 10:00 this morning, but that could change as the investigation into the crash continues.

The grant and loan for Blairsville is part of $190.3 million that will be distributed to 24 projects across 19 Pennsylvania counties that will focus on drinking water, wastewater and non-point source projects across the state.  PENNVEST Executive Director Robert Boos called the low-cost financing “one of the most effective tools Pennsylvania municipalities have for tackling the rising costs of water infrastructure.”  He added that local communities will be empowered to replace aging system and protect public health and invest in long-term resilience.

State police say 81-year-old Terrill A. Brewer of Creekside was reported missing by a family member after she left on foot from her home on Cochran Street sometime between 7 PM Tuesday night and 9:00 AM Wednesday morning.  Creekside, Plumville, Dayton, Clymer, Marion Center, Elderton, Commodore and Coal Run fire departments were called out at 4:00 PM by Indiana County 911 to assist with the search.

Police describe her as a white woman, five-feet four-inches tall, about 110 pounds with shoulder-length grey hair and was seen wearing a white blouse, blue pants and white shoes.  Police also said she has early onset dementia.

That incident was reported on Hillside Lane in West Mahoning Township at 12:27 PM, according to Indiana County 911.  Dayton and Plumville fire departments were sent out at the time.  Details on the fire have not been released.

The Creekside fire department was also called out yesterday at 1:18 PM to a location on Route 110 to assist state police with a traffic detail.

The bill would require schools across the Commonwealth to prohibit phones during the school day, including lunch and other non-educational periods.  There are some exceptions, including those for students with medical conditions and disabilities, English language learners who use the phone as a translator and for certain approved educational activities.

The ban has the backing of Governor Josh Shapiro and the Pennsylvania State Education Association.   Senator Joe Pittman voted in favor of the measure.  If the bill passes, Pennsylvania would become the 30th state to pass a cell phone ban in the classroom.

Troopers were called out around 3:00 AM yesterday for a report of unknown people breaking into the shed on the property of a 23-year-old woman and a 22-year-old man on Seabrook Drive.  Nothing was taken in the incident.

The department reports that from when the seasons tarted on October 4^th to last Saturday, October 17^th, 1,762 flu cases have been reported in the state.  1500 of them were classified as Type A flu and another 262 were classified as Type B.  Activity for both cases is declared as low.  For the week ending October 10^th, there were 221 new adult hospital admissions related to the flu along with 16 new pediatric admissions.  Two flu-related deaths have already reported for the year so far.

RSV cases are also low this year so far, with 106 cases reported in the state for the first two weeks.

No flu or RSV cases have been reported for Indiana County this year so far.

Edwards Moving and Rigging says the first run is a resumption of a superload that stopped last night outside of Blairsville on Route 119.  It will take Campbell’s Mills Road and Black Lick Road before arriving on Power Plant Road.  The trip will run from 9:00 AM to noon.

Meanwhile, a smaller load will start from the Schenley Docks in Armstrong County around 9:00 AM and use the same route to head to the Homer City Energy Campus.  This trip is expected to run from 9 AM to 4 PM today.

Motorists should expect delays and use caution along both routes and allow additional travel time where necessary.

Over the last 12 months, Kiewit has lead demolition and construction efforts on the 3,200-acre site.  Vertical construction began in April of 2026 and completed demolition and excavation efforts in June of 2026 ahead of schedule.  So far, the project has recycled over 110,000 tons of scrap materials.  Kiewit recently has overseen the installation of the first two heat recovery steam generators which have been brought to the site in the superload convoys.  All the progress was made while maintaining a zero-OSHA-recordable incidents record.

The company has also made significant efforts to hire local people and provide hands-on training opportunities for apprentices who are working alongside experienced workers at the facility.

In a statement, Homer City Generation CEO Corey Hessen called Kiewit a “valuable partner in bringing  the Homer City Energy Campus to life, keeping us on schedule while maintaining an exceptional safety record,” and also commended their work to help with charitable efforts, including the Kiewit Cares Charity Golf Tournament last month.

Kiewit Vice President Brian Reinhart said they are proud of the work done so far, and “look forward to carrying that momentum through construction and delivering a facility that will create local job opportunities.”

WHAT WE FIRST REPORTED:

Two vehicle crashes were reported by Indiana County 911 on Tuesday.

The first was on Five Points Road in Armstrong Township at 1:26 PM.  Elderton fire department was sent out at the time.  The other was two hours later, as Coal Run-Iselin firefighters were sent out for a crash on Route 286 West in Young Township.  They were joined by Murrysville EMTs and state police from the Indiana Barracks.

Details on the crashes have been not been released.

The council unanimously approved the resolution for a plan revision for new land use, which will permit sewer tap-ins for the property near the intersection of 5th and Philadelphia Streets.  Borough manager Nicole Sipos said this is one of the last things owner Earl Hewett needs to do.

No word yet on when the diner will open.

Council also approved the final Subdivision and Land Development Ordinance application submission for the Sheetz project to move the store across Philadelphia Street to the former Rite-Aid.  Sipos believes that construction could start early- to mid-2027.

First responders were busy this morning with a structure fire in Armstrong County.  At 3:08 this morning, the Plumville fire department was sent to help Armstrong County crews with a reported structure fire on Plumcreek Road near Elderton.  Details on the fire have not yet been released.

The sheriff’s office posted a news release on Monday saying they were aware of an incident that happened involving both Indiana Borough and County property.  The incident reportedly happened over the weekend at a No Kings rally in front of the courthouse, where someone used paint to write messages on the sidewalk.  The statement from the Sheriff’s office said that the cleanup and restoration would take several hours.

The Sheriff’s office also says that a female suspect and a vehicle were partially identified, and that 0the suspect acted alone.  The investigation is ongoing.  If you have any information, you can call the sheriff’s office at 724-465-3930.

Court documents show 27-year-old Blaze Mendicino had pleaded guilty to charges of simple assault and harassment in connection with the incident in the 200 block of Morewood Avenue on May 18th.  Blairsville police said he stabbed a man in his left arm.  The altercation also left a cut on the victim’s hand.  Mendicino was ordered to serve two years of probation for each count, and Judge Gina Force ordered those sentences to run consecutively.

A sentencing hearing was also held yesterday for Joshua James Stumpf of Indiana.  The 41-year-old man pleaded guilty to possession with intent to deliver for an incident on May 24^th of 2022.  The Indiana County Drug Task Force conducted a raid on his home and found 22 bricks of suspected fentanyl/heroin along with cash, cell phones and items used to package and sell the drugs.  Stumpf was ordered to serve four years of probation by Judge Michael Clark.  A co-conspirator, Charles Wilcox of Northern Cambria, was ordered to serve two to five years in state prison for his guilty plea to the same crime.

The pest inspection and pesticide application is scheduled for Thursday between 3 and 4 PM at a room at the Indiana Senior High School.  The treatment will be done by Environmental Pest Management of Indiana, according to a notification sent to the district community.

This comes about a month after the district treated several rooms at the high school for bedbugs after two students were found with them.  On that occasion, parents were not notified of the treatment until after it happened.

The grant will fund the Child Care Access Means Parents In School, or CCAMPIS  program through the 2029-2023 school year.  IUP is one of two schools in Pennsylvania and one of 40 nationwide that successfully secured the funding, which was issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families on behalf of the U.S. Department of Education.

The university expects to support 40 to 50 student-parents each year of the program.  IUP currently has 300 student-parents, and 133 of them are in undergraduate programs.

This grant is part of IUP’s Impact 150 comprehensive fundraising campaign, in honor of the university’s now over-150 years of existence.

The release states that they are aware of the vandalism that involved borough and county property, and have announced a joint investigation with Indiana Borough Police.

Officials go on to say that the incident was done with paint, not chalk, and will take several hours to clean. No other specifics about the incident were provided.

An unknown female and vehicle have been partially identified. Video evidence suggests that she acted alone.

The $250,000 was split among the Indiana County Community Action Program (ICCAP), The Indiana County Endowment Fund, and the American Cancer Society. That money was raised at the Homer City Generation/ Kiewit Cares Charity Golf Tournament held in September.

Hospital officials say that the project at the IASA building has been held off until later this week or early next week.  The IASA is connected to the hospital building and houses the surgery center, Indy Drug Company, and physician offices.  When the project starts, it will cause a temporary traffic change at the IRMC campus.

The entrance to the IASA, to the left of the hospital’s main entrance, will remain open and patient drop-off will not be affected.  However, the area directly in front of the building will be temporarily blocked off.  The road in front of the entrance is normally one-way, but will temporarily become two-way, allowing vehicles to loop around and return to exit parking lots A and B.

The free IRMC Courtesy Shuttle will continue to operate Monday through Friday from 7 AM to 3:20 PM through the construction period.

The survey is asking businesses in the area of the power plant construction site.  Chamber president Mark Hilliard says the survey should not take long.

He said the purpose of the survey is to inform everyone about the project and its impact.

The survey will be available on the chamber’s website, www.IndianaCountyChamber.com and on the Chamber’s Facebook page.

Court documents show Joshua James Stumpf will go before Judge Michael Clark today in connection with a case from May 24^th of 2022.  Members of the Indiana County Drug Task Force were sent out to a home in the 200 block of Philadelphia Street nd found 22 bricks of suspected heroin/fentanyl along with items to package and sell the drugs, $4000, a shotgun barrel and cell phones that were used in coordinating the drug sales in his possession.  On January 21^st of this year, co-conspirator Charles Wilcox of Northern Cambria, was ordered to serve two to five years in state prison for his guilty plea to the same crime.

Also due for a sentencing hearing today is Blaze Mendicino of Greensburg.  He pleaded guilty to terroristic threats and simple assault for an incident in May 18^th of this year in the 200 block of Morewood Avenue.  He reportedly stabbed the victim in the left arm, and the victim also had a cut on his left hand.  Other charges of aggravated assault, harassment and a second count of simple assault were not prosecuted.

The convoy carrying another piece of heavy equipment for Homer City Generation’s new natural-gas fired power plant is expected to start this morning.  Leaving the docks, the route this time will go to Route 66 through Leechburg and Apollo to Delmont then to Route 22.  It will pull off near the Westmoreland/Indiana County Line near Blairsville to install additional equipment as needed to continue to transport into Indiana County.  Around 7:00 PM, the convoy will travel at a very slow speed and vehicles will be unable to pass it.  Detours will be posted using Bairdstown Road/West Market Street to East Market Street/Old William Penn Highway to the Route 22/119 interchange.  The load will pull off for the night near Blairsville and resume travel around 9:00 AM the following day to finish the trip.

Speeds of 10 to 25 miles an hour are expected, and at some points, the convoy will move slower.  There will be additional single-day trips throughout the scheduled times and that will cause slowdowns but no closures along the route.

Right now, Homer-Center sits fourth in the east region, but they did receive 5000 bonus votes for a video put together.  Another challenge on what makes the town special is underway and people are asked to submit pictures or short videos on what makes this town special.  Winners for that receive another 5000 bonus votes.  The last day to submit a vote for the regionals October 25^th.

Currently, the district has $25,000, but if Homer-Center wins the East division, they will get $250,000 and a $90,000 Gronk Fitness makeover.  The divisional winners will also be eligible for the finals where they can win a $1 million grant.

Shapiro’s campaign says the PAC will help him “provide more direct support” for Democrat candidates in congressional races, including four current challengers to incumbent Republicans.  He’s already endorsed all four of those candidates.

The funds raised by his new PAC would be eligible for use in his own run for federal office, unlike money he’s raised for his current re-election bid.

As of today, the election is only seventeen days away.  The voter registration deadline is tomorrow and the deadline to request a mail-in ballot s October 27^th.  Completed mail-in ballots must be received in your county election office by 8 PM on Election Day, November 3^rd.

The bills would:

• Require voters to approve any tax increase over the Act 1 index.
• Limit county property tax increases to four percent or the regional inflation rate, whichever is less, unless voters approve a higher increase.
• Require voters to approve any major school construction debt.
• Prevent school districts from circumventing voter approval of tax increases through alternative borrowing.
• Create a formula to rank school districts by student performance, with schools in the bottom half of the rankings prohibited from raising property taxes with voter approval.
• Give counties the option of up to a one percent earned income tax to reduce property taxes, but only with voter approval.

None of the bills have been introduced yet.  The bills are sponsored  by Representatives Marc Anderson (York), Jack Rader (Monroe), Ryan Warner (Fayette) and Ann Flood (Northampton).

Sgt. Jeffrey Hoag and Patrolman First Class Andrew Koszarek were both honored with the “Starsky and Hutch” award at the 25^th annual Amen Corner Law Enforcement Awards ceremony at Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh.  The two were honored for their work in January when they were able to stop a burglary and stabbing in progress on Oak Street.  Detrolen Hobbs of Maryland reportedly was stabbing the victim, a home care worker, when they made their way in.  Not only were they able to subdue the suspect, the two were also able to render aid to save the victim’s life.

Indiana Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl said that he is always proud of his officers, but these two in particular.

The Starsky And Hutch award recognizes actions above and beyond the call of duty in action, teamwork or life-saving heroics, and is named after the two characters from the famed TV series.

Hundreds are expected to join the annual benefit run, which will start and end near 8^th and Philadelphia Streets in Downtown Indiana.  Runners and walkers will make their way towards IRMC and Mack Park, covering the perimeter of IUP’s campus before taking the same route back to the start line.

Heather Reed with the Indiana Healthcare Foundation says that she anticipates another record-breaking year for the 5K run and one mile walk and says it is inspiring to see everyone taking part.

She also said that since the race has reached over 700 participants, there will be a surprise announcement this morning.

Customers flooded the Giant Eagle plaza off Route 22 Friday morning to christen the new Bickel’s Surplus and Pittsburgh Gift Shop.

The latter first opened in 2008 under then-parent company Specialty Promotions, but reopened along with the Blair County chain Bickel’s Surplus this week as a dual-brand mega store.

General Manager Nate Della said operating inside Ebensburg’s Hills Plaza made sense due to the amount of foot traffic the area sees each day.

Their opening weekend deals continue today and tomorrow, and daily hours are from 10-5 Monday through Friday, 10-4 on Saturdays, and varying hours on Sundays.

Several events are scheduled including a rally on the steps of the Pennsylvania State Capitol starting at 10 a.m.  Organizers say this round of events will focus on early voting and voter registration, marking a shift from earlier demonstrations opposing President Trump.  More than 15-hundred events are scheduled nationwide.

Superintendent Rob Heinrich reported the attack on October 4^th in a letter to the district community.  In an interview last night, Heinrich said that they are working with their cyber insurance company has connected them with cyber forensics teams and a legal team to help with the issues, and while progress is being made, the investigation will take time.

Heinrich said that this is affecting student life in several ways, including how students are paying for lunch.

He added that in spite of the challenges, the staff has been able to adapt to the conditions.

At a meeting on Monday, the board retroactively approved three contracts in connection with the investigation, and Heinrich said that the cost will be at least $25,000 because that’s the insurance deductible.

The hearing is for William Brown of Delaware County.  He was convicted in December of 2010 on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated assault for the incident on February 28^th of that year where he killed another SCI Pine Grove inmate, Jayson Stewart of Arnold.  During the trial, Danielle Rockey of Emporium testified that she received a letter from Stewart the day before he was killed, asking her to pay off debts owed to fellow prisoners, including $30 that was to be given to Brown.  Brown reportedly suffocated Stewart after an unsuccessful attempt to kill him.

AWS wants to build a 36-building, 1,100 acre data center campus at the center that spans Center and Black Lick Townships, along with ancillary office and storage space.  Byron Stauffer with the Office of Planning and Development said while they accepted the plan for review, this is not a formal acceptance of the plan.

Indiana Borough Manager Nicole Sipos was named the ATHENA Leadership Award recipient.  Sipos is the first woman to serve as manager in the history of the borough, and also serves as the chair of the county’s Solid Waste Authority.  Outside of work, she is a member of Quota, a longtime coach for women’s basketball and a board member for the Wrestling Boosters.

The ATHENA Young Professional award went to Bree Hyde, vice president and project manager for S&T Bank.  She also serves as co-chair of S&T Bank’s Young Professionals Employee Resource Group and chair of the Indiana County Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Organization.

Also awarded was the Spadafora Family Scholarship, which goes to a high school senior who is a member of an Indiana County ATHENA club.  This year’s recipient was Sara Shahin, who earned a $5,000 scholarship.

The public highlighted several environmental-related issues with the potential discharge of water into outfall 27, which is located on Black Lick Creek.  One issue was how hot the water would become and how it would impact fish and wildlife in the area, which was highlighted by Tom Schuster of the Sierra Club.

Also providing testimony was Kathy Eckenrode, who says the discharge will go into areas that are still recovering from the pollution from the coal-fired power plants.

The board approved the resignation of Scott Marino, which will take effect December 31^st.

To that end, the board also approved re-hiring Marino as a technology specialist support consultant, which will work as an independent contractor on an as-needed basis.

Superintendent Daren Johnston explains that Marino did a great job, and the board wants to take its time in hiring a new tech specialist.

The $248,500 grant will be used for work at the Rec Complex that sits on the former site of the Kunkle House. It will include the construction of an indoor/outdoor pavilion, internal walking loop, pedestrian walkway and fishing platform; installation of ADA accessibility items; landscaping; project signs and other related site improvements.

Recreation Director and Facility Manager Ryan Shaffer says that they’ve lost some larger event spaces in the township recently, and they hope to fill the need with this new pavilion.

He added that construction likely won’t begin for a few years.

Supervisors also announced that fall leaf collection for the borough will start October 26^th and run the following 5 Mondays (those being the 2^nd, 9^th, 16^th, 23^rd and 30^th of November.) Josh Krug with the office of planning and development says that they will be taking a look at several aspects of the plan.

Gibson-Thomas has also proposed two sub-consultants for part of the reviews.  They will be Young and Associates for architecture and building placement and Navarro and Wright Consulting Engineers for noise and vibration.  The full plan set and a public comment portal is already available on the department’s website, ICOPD.org.

This comes after a ruling on June 15^th of this year by the State Supreme Court saying that the games fall under the definition of “slot machines”, which can only be in place at casinos and certain authorized truck-stops.  The court gave lawmakers 120 days to enact or amend any laws addressing these machines, and today marks the end of that period, with no such action taken.

In a release, Manzi says that the games and their proceeds are now subject to forfeiture, and any person operating these machines are subject to criminal prosecution. He also says that enforcement efforts by state police will take place over the next few weeks.

Indiana Borough Police say 19-year-old Anthony Alberty and 53-year-old Brian Alberty face charges for a series of incidents on the evening of October 9^th.  The first incident was a noise complaint at 9:59 PM at a location in the 400 block of South 6^th Street.  Investigators said that Anthony was in violation of the noise ordinance and was seen drinking alcoholic beverages.  He was given non-traffic citations for noise and underage drinking.  Officers would be called back at 10:34 as he was still intoxicated, but was harassing neighbors and engaging in disorderly conduct.  On the second trip, he was taken into custody and charged with harassment, public drunkenness and disorderly conduct.

During the second incident, Brian drove to the scene and officers saw that he was drunk as well.  He was taken into custody and charged with DUI and a summary traffic-related crime.

A letter from Superintendent Patricia Berezansky said the district was recently notified by public health officials about a confirmed case of measles from a private school student that shared a bus with Purchase Line students.  The district has already directly notified the parents of the students on that bus and say that if you did not receive a call, the child was not impacted by the exposure.  They are also following all health department guidance and protocols, and any quarantines or health restrictions for exposed students have been ordered directly.

Initial scanner reports said the fire was in a utility room at 74 Deer Run Lane west of Indiana.  Indiana, Elderton, Aultman and Coal Run fire departments were sent out along with the County RIT team and Citizen’s Ambulance at 5:08 this morning according to Indiana County 911.  Reports say the home was evacuated, and the fire was out before crews arrived, but there is still an excessive amount of smoke.

According to Triple-A, Pennsylvania’s average this morning is $4.57 a gallon, down from $4.63 a week ago.  Last year at this time, gas prices were $3.39 a gallon on average in the state.  The national average this morning is $4.34, only a two-cent drop from last week.

Indiana County’s average price is $4.49 this morning, which is the lowest in the region.  Jefferson County is at $4.51, Clearfield County is $4.54, Cambria at $4.56, Westmoreland County is at $4.58, and Armstrong is the highest at $4.62.  Allegheny and Warren Counties tied for the highest average in the state at $4.67.  Franklin county has the lowest average at $4.18.

During the public comment section, many citizens spoke out on the alleged behaviors in the classroom, ranging from teachers being struck, chairs being thrown and foul language being used.  Assistant Superintendent Sean Gildea said that the district is already starting to address the issue.

The concerns had been brought forward to the administration in late September.  The board decided to hold an additional executive session was held after the meeting to discuss the matter further, but no other motions were made afterward.

From 7:00 AM on Saturday to 7:00 the following morning, Indiana Borough Police reported only three arrests.  Two of them were non-IUP students, one charged with harassment and the other for public drunkenness.  One IUP student was charged with DUI and a summary traffic offense.  IUP police reported one non-student for public drunkenness and underage drinking while a student was charged with public intoxication.  They also made two trespassing arrests: one for a non-IUP student and one for a student.  State police also reported one arrest each for underage drinking, public intoxication and DUI.

Yesterday, the Pennsylvania American Water Authority’s Two Lick Filter Plant weather station reported just over six-tenths of an inch of rain in our area.  However, strong winds were reported in the area, and that resulted in four calls for utility lines down that started at 5:57 AM at a location on Route 119 in East Mahoning Township.  Marion Center and Plumville firefighters were sent out at the time.  The other lines down calls were for East Creek Road in East Mahoning Township, with the same two fire departments sent out at 8:40 AM.

The third call brought the Rossiter fire department out at 8:59 AM for a location on Leasure Run Road in Canoe Township.  The final one was in Black Lick Township on Route 217 at 10:20 AM.  Aultman, Black Lick and Blairsville fire departments were sent out.

Jack has already admitted he was the gunman who shot and killed 71-year-old Alice Robson at her home along Furnace Lane, outside of New Florence in Saint Clair Township, in December of 2023.  Co-defendants Melissa Fox-Beacom and Matthew Bates have already been convicted of the murder and sentenced to life in prison.  Both have appealed in State Superior Court, claiming that Jack was an out-of-control killer and they could do nothing to stop him, but prosecutors say Fox-Beacom planned the killing and convinced Jack and Bates to shoot her mother, and bury the body underneath her back porch.

Jack told police that he kept the gun in a plastic bag in his vehicle for several days after the shooting and then tossed it into Donegal Lake, southwest of Ligonier.

The event will be held on Wednesday at the Homer-Center High School auditorium, with the public meeting from 5 to 6 PM, followed by the formal hearing, which will begin at 6 o’clock and last until testimony is complete or until 7:30, whichever comes first.

Leaf collection is tentatively scheduled to begin the week of October 26^th and will continue until completion or the first snowfall.  It should  occur on the day following each home’s trash collection, but it’s weather dependent.  Leaves should be raked into piles between the curb and sidewalk, not into the street.  They should not be bagged, and you should be careful not to keep them away from fire hydrants, poles, and parked cars.

This is for Indiana Borough residents only and is only for leaves.  Sticks and garden refuse won’t be gathered up because they would clog the vacuum.

White Township’s fall leaf collection will take place on five consecutive Mondays starting October 26^th and continuing on November 2^nd, 9^th, 16^th, and 23^rd.

For White Township residents, leaves should be placed in the requisite paper collection bags and set at curbside or the ditch line on public roadways by 7 AM on the collection day.

Bags must weigh fifty pounds or less.  Leaves in plastic bags or loose piles, bags left in driveways off the roadway right-of-way, and grass clippings, branches, brush, or garden waste will not be collected.

According to PennDOT’s most recent release, travel dates this week will be Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Talks on a new contract for APSCUF faculty members opened on August 12^th.  A second session has not been publicly announced.  The faculty contract also expires on June 30^th.

Laskowski appeared to cite a leaked memo from Commonwealth University, which is comprised of Lock Haven, Bloomsburg, and Mansfield universities, that shows the schools are $17 million in debt.  The document says the university and the State System believe they will run out of money in April, and that they must either reduce faculty or reduce scholarships.  According to the leaked document, Chancellor Christopher Fiorentino is requiring all State System schools to align faculty compensation to match tuition and revenue, but Commonwealth University faculty compensation is 115 percent of tuition and revenue.  Last year it was 121 percent.

Laskowski said retrenchment will not save Commonwealth University.  She vowed that APSCUF will fight any effort at retrenchment, which she said, “does not, will not, save anything.”

Despite Laskowski’s appeal, the board voted to ask for the 5.5 percent increase.

Murphy is appealing Westmoreland County Judge Meghan Bilik-DeFazio’s ruling last March that despite mistakes made by his original defense team, their errors were not egregious enough to warrant a new trial.  Murphy claims that his attorneys should have had him at the crime scene when the jury visited it during the trial, and that they failed to investigate other suspects who might have shot the three victims.

Prosecutors said Murphy, who lived in Saltsburg, shot the women because they did not support his relationship with a married woman.

The now-64-year-old Murphy filed his brief before the State Supreme Court on July 16^th.  In his appeal, he specifically named two other possible suspects, one of them the boyfriend at the time of the married woman involved with Murphy; and Jack Edmunson Jr., a former Saltsburg police officer who was later convicted of the 2013 murder of Tunnelton gun shop owner Frank Petro.

While an increase of foot and vehicle traffic was reported in the overnight hours, police reported a safe and peaceful atmosphere all around.  IUP police reported three alcohol-related arrests and three community standard referrals.  Indiana Borough Police said that there were two IUP students arrested on public intoxication and other crimes, a non-student arrested for public drunkenness and one for DUI.  State police announced two arrests for DUI and 10 citations.

I-Act representatives remind people to call 911 if they see anything suspicious, and they are asking people in the Indiana Borough and IUP campus areas to keep their lights on.  They also want to remind people that along with 911, people can call the Open Door or Alice Paul hotlines should those services be needed.

Officers from Indiana Borough, IUP and State Police are out in full force as previously stated by the Indiana Area Collaborative Team.  Officers and other volunteers were also seen along Philadelphia Street helping people cross as part of the awareness efforts of the new traffic signal patterns.

The parade will take its normal route down Philadelphia Street from 11^th to sixth, then turn south on sixth and head to Church Street, then turn off of Church to Oakland Avenue and continue on Oakland until the parade disbands at 11^th Streets.  All parade floats will continue Southwest on Oakland headed toward the Robertshaw building for tear down.

Parade Chairperson Betsy Sarneso said they have been working on this for months.  This year’s theme is “America 250: Pennsylvania: Start Here, We Did!” and Sarneso said it’s not just a celebration of the semi quincentennial but also some of the things that came from Pennsylvania.

The parade will step off this morning at 10:00 AM.  We’ll have liver parade coverage on Renda Digital TV starting at 9:45.

At 4:10 PM, a gas leak was reported in Young Township.  Iselin fire department was sent out at the time to Birds Road near West Lebanon.

Court documents show 19-year-old Zair Alvarez was sentenced in a case of aggravated harassment by a prisoner to one to three years in a state prison for an incident in October of last year.  In a separate case, he pleaded guilty to a charge of inmates procuring a weapon from February of this year.  In that case, he will serve six months to two years.  He was also ordered to pay any associated fines.

Police said at 8:00 AM, a search warrant was executed and took 27-year-old Miles Eggleston-Baxter into custody.  During the search of the residence, police found narcotics, firearms and other contraband associated with the sale of narcotics.

He was wanted on two other cases for conspiracy to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance.  Eggleston-Baxter was arraigned with bond set at $150,000.  He remains in jail as he was unable to post bail.  A preliminary hearing is set for October 15^th.

IUP and Indiana Borough Police will be joined by state troopers, the county District Attorney’s office and the Indiana County Sheriffs office for the extra enforcement efforts over the celebratory weekend, and there will be many efforts in play to make sure people stay safe.  Indiana County DA Robert Manzi said that will include undercover officers and confidential informants.

Indiana Borough Police Chief Justin Schawl says the department is well aware how many more opportunities for problems when there is an influx of visitors to the area or when there are road closures in place, like for the Homecoming Parade tomorrow.

He added that prevention will be the top priority.

The NexTier bank on Route 422 and Burton Drive in Manor Township was robbed yesterday morning.  The suspect initially got away on an ATV.  The bank acknowledged the “incident” on their social media pages, stating that their employees were not harmed.  Authorities confirmed that the robber was armed at the time.  The suspect was found at his home by authorities and he was arrested after about an hour.

Indiana County 911 reported the incident at 3:40 AM on Caroline Street in Robinson.  Bolivar, Clyde, New Florence and Fairfield fire departments were initially called out along with Citizens Ambulance and the Indiana County EMA Team.  Armagh and Seward fire departments were sent in 9 minutes later to provide assistance.  Brush Valley was sent in to standby for Armagh shortly after that.

The award was announced Thursday afternoon at a presentation in the high school auditorium, which also celebrated the $5,000 award that the district had won earlier in the competition.

The Friday Night 5G Lights competition is a national community-building competition and grant program that supports small-town high school football programs and local schools across the United States.

Superintendent Ralph Cecere says that he was excited to learn about the $25k award.

Homer-Center is now one of 40 schools in the nation battling for the chance to receive $250,000 dollars.

The grants are meant to support 306 recreation and conservation projects across the state, and will go toward park and playground improvements, creating and maintaining trails, conserving open space, restoring rivers and watersheds and growing local economies through outdoor recreation.  In a statement, DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said that investing in the projects will increase opportunities for people to experience the parks, rivers and trails of Pennsylvania.

Indiana Borough Police said that at 3:27 PM, officers were dispatched to the intersection of North 4^th and Water Streets.  A boy under the age of 16 was riding the bike on Water Street with the electric assist activated and tried to cross 4^th after stopping at the stop sign when he collided with car coming South on 4^th Street.  Police noted that traffic on 4^th street does not stop at that intersection.  Neither the boy nor the driver were injured, but the car did take on damage to the driver’s side front fender and headlight assembly.  The investigation remains open.

Chief Justin Schawl said this serves as an opportunity to remind parents that children under 16 are not lawfully allowed to operate electric bikes in Pennsylvania and any bicyclist riding on the roads must follow the traffic laws.  He also provided a list of electric vehicles and the state laws that pertain to them.   To view that list, click on the link below.
