Pennsylvania’s Auditor General stressed the need for improvements concerning bridge inspections as part of his report on the PennDOT bridge inspection process.
In his report, Auditor General Timothy DeFoor said that it’s important for the safety of drivers and the investment of tax dollars that all bridge inspection reports are consistent, filed on time and that the qualifications of the inspection teams are readily available at all times. His audit had three objectives, which were to determine the process for inspecting state-owned bridges that are in poor condition, evaluate whether PennDOT followed laws, regulations, standards, policies and guidelines, and determine and evaluate compliance with PennDOT’s policies and procedures for responding to bridges that are identified as critical, imminent failure or failed conditions.
The audit contains seven findings and 24 recommendations, which focused on making sure PennDOT consistently followed policy and procedure. One of the bridges selected by the Auditor General for this study was the First Sgt. Alexander Kelly Memorial Bridge that carries Route 286 over the Kiskiminetas River.
