Pennsylvania’s Attorney General has joined 29 other state attorneys general to reach a settlement with the parent company of a personalized video service.
The settlement reached with Baron, Inc., which does business as Cameo, requires the company to develop and maintain an extensive system to ensure compliance with all state consumer protection laws and federal endorsement disclosure requirements. The company was accused of failing to notify customers that videos promoting products were paid endorsements through a subsidiary called “Business Cameo”. A state investigation discovered that people were seeing videos of celebrities posting positive reviews of products and services without disclosing the fact that the celebrity was paid for the endorsement.
PA Attorney General Michelle Henry said that all violations are taken seriously, but she applauded the company for taking immediate steps to remedy the situation and create a more transparent experience for the consumer.
