Rowdy Tellez wasn’t supposed to play Wednesday but the Pirates’ first baseman was inserted into the lineup when Bryan Reynolds suffered back spasms. It worked out well as Tellez and Martín Pérez led the Bucs to a win over the Cardinals. Joe Block has the story.
The Pirates have started their post-All Star break schedule by taking two out of three games from the Phillies and the Cardinals. Manager Derek Shelton likes the Bucs’ compete level.
Shelton says he had a feeling Tellez would have a big day, especially since he was supposed to have the day off.
A key part of the four-run second inning yesterday was Andrew McCutchen drawing a bases-loaded walk and Connor Joe following up with a two-run double off the glove of centerfielder Dylan Carlson. Shelton says it was the type of clutch performance with runners in scoring position that the Pirates didn’t get in Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss.
Pérez finally got his second win of the season, as he had the double-play ball working. He said he has to believe in his stuff to be effective.
The Pirates are off today to travel to Phoenix, where they open a three-game series with the Diamondbacks tomorrow night.
Pitcher Bailey Falter made his rehab start for Indianapolis in their 14-3 win over Iowa yesterday. He threw three innings and gave up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Both Liover Peguero and Matt Fraizer hit grand slams for Indy in the win.
With the signing yesterday of fourth-round draft pick Eddie Rynders, the Pirates have seven of the top eleven draft picks under contract. Rynders is a shortstop from Wisconsin Lutheran High School, but is expected to play third base as a pro. MLB Pipeline’s Jim Callis says Rynders has “power potential, improved quickness and athleticism” that will fit the hot corner.

Two big MLB stars are dealing with major injuries…Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich will see a spine specialist to determine if he needs season-ending surgery. He was put on the 10-day injured list yesterday.
Angels outfielder Mike Trout left his first rehab start yesterday and is having his knee re-examined. He had meniscus surgery on April 30th. He played only two innings for Salt Lake yesterday.
