Everybody reported to camp for the Steelers yesterday at St. Vincent College and the first practice is scheduled for this morning. Coach Mike Tomlin will gather his team on Chuck Noll Field at 10:30 AM as he switches practices from the traditional start time of 1:55. It used to be 2:55, but Tomlin says the timing works better to practice in the morning.
While he loves coming to St. Vincent, Tomlin said he isn’t looking forward to the daily questions about the quarterbacks, with Russell Wilson and Justin Fields vying for playing time. Heading into camp, Wilson continues to have the “pole position” to be the starter.
Tomlin notes there is a lot to like about Russell Wilson’s approach to the quarterback position.
As to his expectations for his team, the coach says the time for talk is over.
Veteran linebacker Cole Holcombe, defensive lineman Dean Lowry, and returner/running back Cordarelle Patterson will begin camp on the sidelines. Holcombe is returning from major knee surgery and Lowry from a torn pectoral muscle that ended his season with the Vikings last year. They are both on the physically unable to perform list. Patterson is on the non-football injury list after suffering a hamstring injury while working out ahead of camp.
