Paul Skenes was dominant once more, but the Pirates couldn’t muster any offense against Lance Lynn and the Cardinals, as Skenes suffered his first Major League loss at PNC Park. Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton says Paul Skenes is one cool customer.
Shelton says the Pirates didn’t get the key hit when they needed it.
It was the first time Paul Skenes had ever pitched into the 9th inning professionally. He says the atmosphere at PNC Park was exciting.
Pirates’ injury news primarily focuses on pitchers:
- Starter Bailey Falter will pitch a rehab game today at Indianapolis and the team will reassess his health afterward to determine if he needs another minor league start.
- Jared Jones threw on flat ground yesterday in the bullpen at PNC Park and is playing catch at around 100 to 105 feet. He will throw off a “short box” slope next, with a bullpen session planned this weekend.
- Hunter Stratton has made three rehab appearances in Florida with no arm issues.
- Lefty Ryan Borucki struck out the side and gave up one hit in one inning for Indianapolis last night. (In that game, Indy DH Seth Beer was 4-for-5 and hit three home runs as the Indians beat Iowa, 13-6.)
- Minor League pitcher Braxton Ashcraft has been examined by Dr. Keith Meister, who did his Tommy John surgery in 2021, and he says Ashcraft’s forearm tightness is muscle-related on the outside forearm. He’s playing catch on flat ground and could return in seven to ten days.
- Director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk says catcher Endy Rodriguez, who had Tommy John surgery last winter, is hitting off a tee and the team is “discussing” the possibility of him batting in minor league games as a designated hitter, but they haven’t decided yet.
The Pirates have signed their third-round draft choice, Wake Forest pitcher Josh Hartle, a 6-5, 210-pound left-hander, who was assigned to the Florida Complex League.
