The River Valley School Board yesterday held a special meeting for discussion of the proposed charter school for the Saltsburg region.
The Saltsburg Charter Academy School would be located within the former Saltsburg Middle-High School, but the board is willing to consider a different location if there is not enough room to hold all the students. Speaking on behalf of the charter school, Paul Schwartz said that the charter school could represent the possible end of some of the disagreement between Blairsville and Saltsburg that goes back to when the district was consolidated over 50 years ago.
There was some skepticism expressed during the public comment portion of the meeting. One speaker, Luke Faust, claimed a possible conflict of interest concerning River Valley Board Member Melanie Cribbs Pantalone.
Pantalone replied that according to the charter school laws, there is no conflict of interest.
The public can still submit comments for the hearing until 4 o’clock this afternoon. Contact the superintendent’s office to find out how. Board president Rick Harper said that the district then has 75 days to approve the application, and he feels that a vote will come up during January’s meeting.
