Shoppers across Indiana County and the rest of the U.S. are eager to make the most of Amazon’s annual Prime Day, which gets underway today.
The two-day online shopping event allows customers to take advantage of free shipping offers, exclusive discounts and more. While the deals seem too good to pass up, there are some negative repercussions, including affects on mental health and scams.
Devin Mills, an addiction researcher at Texas Tech, says that shopping is fun, but some people do it to make bad feelings go away.
Prime Day also elevates the risk of scams. Officials at Amazon say scammers are impersonating representatives in an effort to steal money from customers. Some deceptive tactics include phishing emails, which could result in scammers stealing credit card information, or the sale of fake products.
If you fall victim to a scam, contact the Indiana County Sheriff’s Office at 724-465-3930, or your local police department.
