The union representing cleaning and maintenance staff, secretaries, instructional assistants, cafeteria staff and monitors, and nurses’ assistants have released a statement ahead of tomorrow’s negotiation session.
Both sides are continuing to negotiate terms as they could not reach an agreement before the contract expired on June 30th. In a prior statement, School Board Negotiations Committee Chairperson Jill Eckenrode said that wages and health care costs are major sticking points. A statement from the Penns Manor Educational Support Professionals is saying they are not the only issues, saying that the district has indicated eliminating a custodial position that would do nothing to address staffing issues. Their statement also claims that having low starting wages and employee-only healthcare could deter qualified candidates from applying for work. Eckenrode said in an recent interview that in the early bird contract in January that would have placed the district support staff in the top two wage tiers in the area.
The next round of negotiations starts tomorrow morning.
