The Pennsylvania Department of Health is urging people to get vaccinated not only against Covid-19, but also the flu.
Acting Health Secretary Allison Beam said that across the state, the number of flu cases went up by 2000 in one week, with cases in 65 out of 67 counties. Beam said that people are getting tested for flu more frequently as Covid-19 symptoms can be like flu symptoms. That may be the reason behind the reported recent spike in cases. Flu is still below the statewide epidemic threshold, but there have been two deaths of people age 65 or older.
The department said that while people have been getting the Covid-19 vaccine, they still need to get their flu shot as the Covid vaccine does not prevent the flu.
The department advises that if you catch the flu, stay home, and if you feel extremely ill or are at risk from developing serious complications from the flu, seek medical attention immediately.
