State police released the results of the annual Independence Day weekend detail, and there is an increase in the number of crashes, including fatal ones, across Pennsylvania.
Over the five day period that started July 3rd and ran through the 7th, troopers investigated 774 vehicle crashes resulting in 11 fatalities in 11 fatal crashes. 244 people were hurt. 64 crashes were DUI collisions and four of those resulted in fatal injuries. This marks an increase over the five-day driving period last year, where there were 668 crashes and three people killed in three fatal crashes.
Also during the five day period, 556 people were arrested for Driving Under the Influence, issued 7,975 speeding tickets, cited 225 child safety seat violations, 876 seat belt violations and over 19,000 other citations.
In Troop A, which covers the majority of Indiana and Westmoreland counties and all of Cambria and Somerset counties, troopers investigated 34 crashes, one of which was a fatal crash that took the life of one person. Seven people were injured in those crashes. Five of the 34 investigated crashes were DUI-related. Troopers in the area also arrested 27 people for DUI, issued 469 speeding tickets, 49 seatbelt citations and two for child safety seat violations. Over 1000 other tickets were issued for various violations.
These are for crashes that state police investigated, and do not include statistics from local police departments.
