One day after learning he was not on the National League All-Star roster, Mitch Keller took out his frustrations on the Mets, spinning eight dominant innings in an 8-2 win at PNC Park.
Joe Block has the recap.
Keller’s gem wouldn’t have been possible without a big day from Rowdy Tellez, who made two diving stops at first base and had a run-scoring hit in the game. Manager Derek Shelton said Tellez was spectacular.
Instead of taking credit, Tellez complimented Keller for being a durable pitcher.
Keller said all of his pitches were working for him.
Keller even earned the praise from Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo, who said he has a great selection of pitches.
The Pirates open their final road trip before the All-Star break with a stop in Milwaukee tonight. The Pirates have not announced a starter. RHP Colin Rea will start for the Brewers. He’s 8-2 with a 3.34 ERA. It’s a 7:45 airtime, 8:10 first pitch on WCCS.
Oneil Cruz was removed from the game in the sixth inning after his hamstring tightened up while running the bases. Ke’Bryan Hayes replaced him out of an abundance of caution, according to Derek Shelton. No update has been given regarding a possible trip to the injured list.
The Pirates released outfielder Canaan Smith-Njigba on Saturday, according to the team’s transaction log. Smith-Njigba came to Pittsburgh as part of the Jameson Taillon trade in 2021 but couldn’t piece it together with the Pirates, hitting .135 with no home runs and 16 strikeouts in 18 games. He was designated for assignment by the Pirates in January, claimed by Seattle in February, then claimed again by the Pirates two weeks later.
ALTOONA CURVE
The Curve open the final homestand before the All-Star break tonight when they welcome the Bowie Baysox to PNG Field. Altoona has not announced a starter.
