A former U.S. Congresswoman and State Senator has announced her intention to run for governor.
Reports say that Melissa Hart joins a crowded field for the Republican nomination for the governor’s seat next May. She also becomes the first woman to seek her party’s nomination. Hart represented the Pittsburgh region in the State Senate from 1991 to 2001, and then served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. She believes that her experience in both public service as an elected official and the last 14 years in the private sector will serve her in good stead. Recently, Hart has served as an attorney, on the board of a bank and as the co-founder of a political consulting firm.
Hart is expected to make a formal announcement on joining the race in January. Other candidates for the Republican party include Shawn Berger, Jake Corman, Dave White, Guy Ciarrocchi, Bill McSwain, Lou Barletta, Joe Gale, Jason Monn, Jason Richey, Dr. Nche Zama, Charlie Gerow and John Venture.
On the Democrat side, only Attorney General Josh Shapiro has declared his candidacy for the Democrat nomination.
