State Representative Jim Struzzi and Senator Joe Pittman announced on Monday that a total of $3.5 million in Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program grants will be headed to Indiana County for two different projects.
In a joint news release, it was announced that Indiana Regional Medical Center was awarded a $1 million grant to expand the facilities in White Township. This marks the third round of funding for IRMC, and marks the third year running that the medical facility has received RACP awards. The money will be used for the construction of a two-story, 15,000 square-foot facility that will house a Biosafety Level 2 lab, an outpatient safety clinic, an ambulatory surgery clinic and a family practice clinic. Struzzi said that the money will have a “huge impact on the level of care and variety of services we can provide locally.”
Another $2.5 million will go to the Indiana County Development Corporation, and that will be used to acquire and redevelop outdated student rental housing properties with the goal of preparing those properties for conversion to adaptive use. Pittman said that the money comes at a time when demographics are changing and student populations are declining, so ICDC is looking at ways of repurposing the buildings. He said the effort “will create a property that can be reused to help improve the economy of the community.”
