The PA Senate on Wednesday passed a bill that would limit the use of smartphones in the classroom.
Senate Bill 1207 would establish the Cellphone Lockable Bag pilot program which awards grants to participating schools to purchase secure, lockable cell phone bags that students would put their mobile devices in until the end of the school day. The bill also requires school districts taking part in the pilot program to track academic performance, mental health, bullying and other behavioral health issues in an effort to study how smartphones affect students in school. Exceptions would allow those who have a documented medical condition and use their cell phone to track their health to have them with them.
Senator Joe Pittman voted in favor of the bill, which passed by a 45-5 vote. It now heads to the State House for further consideration.
