Mitch Keller got roughed up by the St. Louis Cardinals last night and the Pirates’ bats couldn’t bring them back as the Bucs dropped the first game of their NL Central series. Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says Mitch Keller was off a bit and it cost him runs.
Mitch Keller says it was just a bad outing for him.
Luis Ortiz returned to the mound for the Pirates for the first time since a 6-inning spot start against the Reds last week. He gave up a run in two innings of relief. Shelton likes being able to call on Ortiz in any situation.
After an extended break since he last pitched on June 22nd, Jared Jones [5-6, 3.66 ERA] returns to the mound for the Bucs tonight against the Cards’ Miles Mikolas [5-7, 5.32 ERA]. Jones picked up the win as he threw 7 innings and gave up 2 runs against Tampa Bay the last time out. It’s a 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
Catcher Henry Davis has returned to the Pirates after his rehab from a concussion was halted due to lingering symptoms. Davis was 0-for-6 with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks in two games with Altoona and reported light headaches and nausea. Director of Sports Medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that Davis is asymptomatic now and is doing baseball activities. He will be re-evaluated today.
Tomczyk also reported that “all signs are very encouraging” for pitchers Ryan Borucki and Marco Gonzalez, who continue rehab assignments at Indianapolis. No timetable has been announced for the return of either one of them to the Pirates active roster.
Quinn Priester is also rehabbing with Indy. He got the win last night in an 8-2 win over Louisville, pitching five innings and giving up just one run.
Other injured Pirates continue to work on returning to action…David Bednar is playing catch from 120 feet and will throw off a mound soon and Hunter Stratton is throwing from flat surfaces. Tomczyk reported that three players rehabbing after Tommy John surgery are progressing: Johan Oviedo is throwing from 90 feet, Endy Rodriguez is throwing from 105 feet and is hitting from the left side of the plate, and minor league prospect Mike Burrows threw four innings in his first game back after his surgery in the spring of ’23.
