The display of 90 crosses adorned in safety vests and hard hats will be at the PennDOT building at the corner of Indian Springs Road and Oakland Avenue through July 7th. The memorial was created by Bradford County maintenance workers after the death of co-worker Leah Rumsey , who was hit by a car while flagging in a work zone. Two people from District 10 are part of the memorial: Robert Greeley of Jefferson County, who died in 1982 and Ronald Porter of Butler County in 2003. The memorial represents those killed while on duty going back to 1970.
It is meant to serve as a reminder to drivers to be careful in work zones, and to keep these tips in mind:
- Drive the posted work zone speed limit.
- Stay alert and pay close attention to signs and flaggers.
- All motorists are required to travel with their headlights turned on in all posted work zones, not just active work zones. It is necessary for drivers in vehicles with daytime running lights to turn on their headlights on to activate their taillights.
- Maintain a safe distance around vehicles. Drivers may experience sudden stops or slow-downs leading up to or in work zones – be sure you have the space between you and the surrounding vehicles to react.
- Avoid distractions and give your full attention to the road.
- Always buckle up.
- Be patient.
Families and friends of District 10 employees who lost their lives in a workplace accident are encouraged to contact Community Relations Coordinator Tina Gibbs to schedule a visit or get more information.
