YOUTH LEGION
The start of July brings with it the start of the Indiana County Youth American Legion League playoffs, which are using a new format this season featuring all six teams in action.
There are two games today. Number six Brookville visits third-seeded Marion Center and number five Homer City Post 493 travels to number four Armstrong.
The winners will advance to the semifinals, which are the best of three, and start tomorrow. The lower remaining seed will play at number one S.W. Jack of Indiana and the higher remaining seed will play at second seed Mahoning Valley of Punxsutawney.
Game two of the semifinal series will be on Wednesday and after taking the 4th of July off, game three, if necessary, would be Friday. All of the games are scheduled to get underway at 6 o’clock.
SENIOR LEGION
Homer City Post 493 was only three outs away from sweeping a doubleheader yesterday, but Somerset rallied to wipe out a four-run deficit and win, 11-10. Homer City took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning when Somerset put up four runs in that frame to make it 7-5. The two teams each scored a run in the 6th and Homer City put up two more in the 7th, but Homer City pitching couldn’t hold off the five-run rally in the 7th.
Six Somerset players had two hits in the 15-hit attack, led by Ashton Harmon’s two doubles. Rocco Cosentino and Mike Dolan each had three hits for Homer City, with Cosentino having a double and triple and Dolan a double.
Homer City won the first game, 9-4. Braden Dunn and Michael Krejocic both had two hits and Krejocic threw five-and-a-third innings to get the win.
