The cost of live Christmas trees may be going up, especially in Indiana County where Christmas tree farmers are facing potential supply shortages.
Reports say that the shortages have been building over many years, with issues ranging from fungal diseases to an influx of deer destroying some of the crops, to seed shortages. Many local Christmas tree farmers are not exporting as many trees to larger companies this year, focusing to sell their crops on their own.
It’s estimated that the cost of a live Christmas tree could go up by 30 percent due to the limited supply, but some expect the supplies to be back to normal levels in a few years, and there may be a surplus of trees in five years’ time.
