Former Pitt star Bub Carrington was taken by the Washington Wizards with the 14th overall selection in the NBA Draft last night. He’ll be playing close to home. He’s from Baltimore. Carrington is the ninth Pitt player to be taken in the first round and the first since Steven Adams was drafted by Oklahoma City in 2013.
Round two of the draft is today, and Pitt’s Blake Hinson is expected to be among the selections.
With Carrington and Hinson leaving the Panthers, along with center Federinko Federinko and forward William Jeffress, coach Jeff Capel has recruited guard Damian Dunn, who’s played at Temple and Houston; forward Cameron Corgen, transferring from Florida State; and guard Amsal Delalic, who is from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Atlanta took French forward Zaccharie Risacher with the first overall pick. The Wizards took fellow French forward Alex Sarr second, marking the first time in NBA history two international players were taken with the top two picks. The Rockets picked Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard with the third choice, and UConn’s went fourth to San Antonio, followed by Ron Holland II to the Pistons, who skipped college and went straight to the NBA G League.
Two celebrated big men, UConn’s Donovan Clingan and two-time Wooden Award winner Zach Edey of Purdue, were taken in the first round. Clingan went to Portland at number 7 and Edey was taken by Memphis at number nine.
