State police have released statistics from the Thanksgiving holiday enforcement period.
During the five-day driving period from November 24th to the 28th, five people were killed across the state in five fatal collisions. 1,155 total crashes were investigated by troopers, 91 of those were alcohol-related. Two of the five alcohol-related crashes were fatal. 255 people were injured in all the crashes over the holiday. State police also arrested 553 people for driving under the influence, issued 10,126 speeding tickets, 849 seat belt citations, and 84 citations for child safety seat violations.
State police did not keep statistics for the Thanksgiving period in 2020 due to the pandemic. Comparing 2021 with 2019, state police saw fewer fatal crashes, fatalities and injuries, but more total crashes and more alcohol-related crashes.
In Troop A, which covers Most of Indiana County, all of Cambria and Somerset counties and parts of Westmoreland County, 54 crashes were investigated over the five-day period. Six of those were alcohol-related. Police reported no fatalities and 13 people injured. Police also made 39 DUI investigations, issued 614 speeding tickets, 64 people seatbelt citations and two child safety seat citations.
