At their meeting Tuesday night, the River Valley school board approved next year’s budget, and it contains no tax increase for district residents.
The budget balances at $36,777,918 and brings a 15.95 millage rate for Indiana County residents and 122.99 rate for Westmoreland County residents. Superintendent Philip Martell said a lot of work went into balancing this year’s budget, but he was grateful that taxes were not raised.
The budget passed by a 6-to-3 vote with Melanie Pantalone, Jessica Clawson, and Beverly Caranese voting against it. Pantalone said she wants to see more funding go towards classroom instruction.
In other business, the board approved a 5 percent salary increase for Martell, that will take affect July 1. The board also approved hiring Jonathan Santoro as the Director of Finance and Operations. He will work under a five-year agreement at a starting salary of $$95,000.
