UPDATE: The Penguins have confirmed the signing of the purchase agreement by Fenway Sports Group. Terms of the deal have not yet been announced. The NHL board of governors is expected to sign off on the deal and the sale will close by the end of the year. Lemieux and Burkle will remain as minority owners.
WHAT WE PREVIOUSLY REPORTED
Fenway Sports Group has signed the purchase agreement to acquire the Pens, according to sports business news outlet Sportico.
This is just the latest step in the process for the projected new ownership. The NHL is expected to approve the agreement once league officials look it over. Current co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle are expected to remain a part of the franchise in some form, and all senior management is expected to remain in place once the deal is complete.
