A travelling memorial dedicated to PennDOT workers is expected to make its way to Indiana County early next month.
The PennDOT Workers Memorial will be at the District 10 office in Indiana from July 2nd to the 7th. The display honors PennDOT employees that were killed in the line of duty since the establishment of the department in 1970. The memorial is made up of crosses draped with high-visibility vests and PennDOT hard hats and was created by Bradford County maintenance workers after the death of co-worker Leah Rumsey. She was killed when she was hit by a car in a work zone. Two employees of District 10, Robert Greeley of Jefferson County and Ronald Porter of Butler County, are included as part of that tribute.
The memorial also serves as a reminder that people should take extra care when driving in a work zone, including staying under the posted speed limit, staying alert and paying attention to flaggers and signs, turning on headlights when in work zones, maintaining a safe following distance, avoiding distractions, buckling up and remaining patient.
PennDOT invites the families and friends of District 10 employees who lost their lives through a workplace accident to contact community relations coordinator for District 10 Christina Gibbs to visit the memorial or want more information. Her email address is chgibbs@pa.gov.
