A third straight win last night for the Pirates, who gain a game on both the Cubs and the Brewers with a 6-3 win over Detroit at PNC Park.
The Pirates led 6-0 before Chad Kuhl gave up three runs in the sixth inning. He struck out six over six innings of three-run ball for his fifth win. Kuhl and three relievers retired the last 12 Tigers hitters in order. Andrew McCutchen went 2-4 with a home run for the Bucs, and Kuhl had a two-run single for his first two Major League RBI.
The Pirates and Tigers four-game home-and-home series shifts to Detroit tonight. Ivan Nova pitches for the Bucs against Justin Verlander.
The Pirates are 3-and-a-half games out of first, behind the Cubs in the NL Central and are just a game under .500. The Cardinals are 2-and-a-half-out and the Brewers a game-and-a-half back.
