Pitt hung with Vanderbilt for a while last night, but a rough stretch at the close of the first half, and then an ever rougher stretch in the final 10 minutes of the game allowed the Commodores to take command and win the game, 68-52.
The Panthers shot poorly, only 36 percent from the field, and they took bad shots, according to coach Jeff Capel. They led 18-9 with 7:29 left in the first half, but trailed 24-23 at the half. They were still behind by only two with 7:58 left in the game, but Vanderbilt then went on a 24-10 run to put the game away.
Guard Femi Odukale led Pitt with 14 points. He said afterward that there was too much bickering going on between the Panthers throughout the course of the game.
Capel says the Panthers have to learn that they are not talented enough to win on scoring alone.
Pitt plays next on Saturday afternoon at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. The Retrievers are 3-2 and coming off a 98-67 win over American University on Tuesday.
