The Pirates have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with first baseman/outfielder Yoshi Tsutsugo. The former Japanese league star struggled with the Dodgers and Rays last year, but after the Dodgers released him in August, the Pirates picked him up and he hit .268 with eight home runs, eight doubles, and 24 RBIs in the season’s final 43 games. Tsutsugo will turn 30 years old tomorrow.
The Pirates also have named a new third base coach, replacing Joey Cora, who was let go after the season ended. Mike Rabelo was the Bucs’ major league field coordinator last season. He was originally hired as the assistant hitting coach in January of 2020. Cora was also the Pirates’ primary infielders coach, but Rabelo will not inherit those duties. Manager Derek Shelton says someone else on the staff, perhaps bench coach Don Kelly, will pick up that job.
