The skyrocketing temperature at PNC Park was nothing compared to the scorching hot bat of Bryan Reynolds and the heat coming from Mitch Keller’s right arm yesterday. Joe Block has the recap of a series-clinching win over the Reds.
Manager Derek Shelton is having trouble coming up with the right word to describe Reynolds at the plate lately. (“Hitterish”!!)
Even though it was the 8th inning, Keller’s pitch count was low when Shelton took him out of the game. Shelton says it was the right move.
Shelton says the pitching was great in the series, in which the Pirates gave up only three runs. He loved watching Keller match up against Hunter Greene yesterday.
The Pirates activated infielder Alika Williams yesterday and sent him to Indianapolis. With the emergence of Nick Gonzalez as the starter at second base and the move of Jared Triolo to a utility role, there was no room for Williams on the big league roster.
The Bucs are off today and open a three-game series against Tampa Bay at PNC Park starting tomorrow night.
MLB
Major League Baseball will honor the late Willie Mays today with a special ceremony before the MLB at Rickwood Field game between the Giants and Cardinals in Birmingham, Alabama.
Rickwood Field is the oldest professional ballpark in the U.S. and is where Mays began his career in the Negro Leagues. It was also the site of the final Negro League World Series in 1948, with Mays and the Black Barons losing to the Homestead Grays, from Pittsburgh, in five games.
The Giants will wear the uniforms of the San Francisco Sea Lions and the Cardinals will represent the St. Louis Stars. First pitch in Birmingham is at 7:15.
ALTOONA CURVE

Perez, Tsung-Che Cheng, Kervin Pichardo, and Dustin Peterson all had two hits in a 12-hit Curve attack and Emmanuel Chapman threw three shutout innings of relief for the win.
Altoona still has not named its starter for tonight.
