The heat wave is continuing today across the Eastern parts of the U.S., and in our area, people are headed to community pools to cool off.
Mack Park Pool in Indiana along with pools in Homer City and Saltsburg have all experienced increased use over the last few days, with all three reporting that the number of people coming to the pool has doubled. Eric Neal with the YMCA of Indiana County said that along with the increase in daily admissions, memberships for the Y have also increased.
Deanna Fink with the Saltsburg-Conemaugh Township Rec Board also reported an increase in pool use and concessions since Monday.
While the Homer City pool has also seen an uptick in customers, they along with the other pool operators, are aware that with lifeguards working outdoors, they also need to be able to cool off, so they have shaded areas and a rotation to allow lifeguards to cool off every so often, and they are supplied with drinking water. On top of that, Janet Arone with the pool said they can take a dip as they move for their rotation.
Expect area pools to remain very active as the heat wave continues. The National Weather Service has extended the heat advisory for Indiana County to 8:00 PM Saturday.
