The Penguins have hired Kirk McDonald as the new head coach at Wilke-Barre/Scranton. He’s spent the last two seasons coaching junior hockey with the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the United States Hockey League, and before that coached eight seasons with Reading in the ECHL. For five of those seasons, he was also the team’s director of hockey operations.
McDonald takes over for J.D. Forrest, who was let go in April.

The Washington Capitals and Los Angeles Kings traded star players yesterday. The Caps get center Pierre-Luc Dubois in exchange for goaltender Darcy Kuemper. Both Dubois and Kuemper had disappointing seasons last year and are looking to rebound.
Another of the Penguins’ Metro Division rivals, the New Jersey Devils, made a trade yesterday acquiring goaltender Jacob Markstrom from Calgary for defenseman Kevin Bahl and a top-10 protected first round pick in 2025. Calgary is also retaining 31.25 percent of Markstrom’s salary in the deal.
