The Pirates picked up a game on both the Cubs and Brewers, and are 4-and-a-half back in the NL Central after a dramatic walkoff win Sunday at PNC Park.
In his first game since being reacquired this weekend by the Pirates, Sean Rodriguez smacked a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Pirates past the Padres 5-4. The Pirates got Rodriguez from the Atlanta Braves on Saturday in a trade for Altoona infielder Connor Joe.
The Pirates and Tigers open up a two-and-two home-and-home series tonight at PNC Park. The teams will play twice in Pittsburgh before heading to Detroit for two more games. Trevor Williams starts tonight opposite Tigers righty Jordan Zimmermann.
Pirates GM Neal Huntington said yesterday the Jung Ho Kang situation played a role in the decision to reacquire Sean Rodriguez. Huntington said Kang, who has missed this season due to legal problems from his DUI conviction in South Korea, may never return to the Pirates.
