The first of eight people who were charged in connection with the death of a West Wheatfield Township man was sentenced this morning in Indiana County Court.
20-year-old Taylyn Nashell Edwards of Johnstown was sentenced to life in state prison for a guilty but mentally ill plea to a charge of first-degree murder in the death of Hayden Garreffa in 2022. She along with six other adults and a juvenile were charged in connection with his death. Prosecutors say they lured him out of his grandmother’s home, abducted him and stabbed him multiple times before leaving him in the tall grass off Oneida Mine Road in Brush Valley Township. She was also ordered to serve five to 10 years for a charge of kidnapping to facilitate a felony.
Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi called it a good start in the process of bringing those responsible for his death to justice, but there was still a lot of work to do.
Manzi added that as a part of her life sentence, she will receive mental health treatment while in prison. The other six adults are scheduled for criminal call hearings between August and October. The status of the juvenile’s case has not been publicly announced.
