Indiana Area School District Superintendent Michael Vuckovich has written a letter to district residents, updating them on the latest information on mandatory masking of students.
Commonwealth Court last week found the Wolf Administration’s state-wide school mask mandate to be unlawful, and this week ordered that the mandate must end on December 4th.
Vuckovich writes that he expects the Administration to appeal to the State Supreme Court, but it’s unclear when the court would rule on the issue. He says there are three things that could happen between now and December 4th. Essentially, they are:
- no change in the Commonwealth Court ruling;
- a Supreme Court reversal of the order that allows the mandate to stay in place;
- or a new mandate from the State Health Department, with questionable timing that would further muddle the issue.
Vuckovich says he still does not have the answers yet, but the district will continue to work through the situation together. Ultimately, whether the mask mandate is lifted December 4th or in January, as Governor Wolf prefers, the decision will not automatically mean students don’t have to mask. That decision would simply be moved from the state’s purview to each school district, to make its own decision.
