The Pirates couldn’t get over the top last night against Cardinals ace Sonny Gray, as the Bucs dropped Game Two of the three-game series. Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton says Bailey Falter couldn’t close the deal against the Cardinals hitters, and that made him throw a lot more pitches than he would have preferred.
Shelton says it was good to see Henry Davis square up a ball for his first home run of the season.
Falter says he had a lot of extra work to do last night, and he was grateful for the defense and relief pitching for giving the Bucs a chance to win.
A couple of injury updates from the Pirates’ wounded pitching corps…left-hander reliever Ryan Borucki threw a 20-pitch bullpen session yesterday, his first time throwing off a slope since Spring Training, and reported no problems. If he still feels well in recovery time, he has more mound work scheduled Saturday and next Tuesday.
Left-handed starter Marco Gonzalez also threw off a mound yesterday, for the first time since he landed on the injured list April 14th after a start in Philadelphia. The Pirates currently have a hole in the rotation with Gonzalez out and Quinn Priester on the injured list. The team did not have an update on Priester.
In this afternoon’s series finale, the Pirates send their ace, Mitch Keller [8-3, 3/16 ERA] to the mound to face the Cards Lance Lynn [2-3, 3.58 ERA]. The airtime 1:50, first pitch is at 2:15 on WCCS.
