The Penguins are getting used to playing extra hockey, as they played another extended game last night.

The Penguins’ Bryan Rust had a goal in the shootout, setting up Carter’s game-winner. Tristan Jarry stopped three of the four Panthers’ shots in the shootout, including the game-saver on Anton Lundell.
Penguins goals in regulation included a first period wrist shot by Teddy Bleuger and a wrister from Evan Rodrigues off a nice feed from Jason Zucker created a partial breakaway.
The game was a bit too wide open for the taste of assistant coach Todd Reirden, who was again behind the bench in the covid absence of head coach Mike Sullivan. But Reirden says the defense and penalty kill tightened up after Florida scored the game-tying goal early in the third period.
Reirden appreciates the veteran leadership of Jeff Carter, who has taken the team under his wing with Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin out of the lineup.
Tristan Jarry has been in goal for three shootout games in a row and he finally won one. He says his teammates have helped him hone his shootout game.
The Penguins got defensemen Marcus Pettersson and Chad Ruhwedel back from the covid-19 list, but Pettersson left the game after a collision in the first period and did not return.
