Two fireballers faced off last night at PNC Park, and it was a classic duel won by the Pirates’ Jared Jones. Joe Block has the story.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton says it was a classic duel between Jones and Tyler Glasnow, and the Pirates did just enough to win.
Shelton says Jones kept his emotions under control against the team he grew up rooting for.
Jones says he knew he’d have to keep a level head against his hometown team.
Before the game, the Pirates made a number of roster moves, including calling up Jack Suwinski from Indianapolis, and he paid immediate dividends with his home run. Infielder Liover Peguero was also summoned from Indianapolis. Ji Hwan Bae was placed on the 10-day injured list with a sprained wrist and Michael A. Taylor was placed on paternity leave. As previously announced, Henry Davis was promoted, and the Bucs also swapped relief pitchers with Indy, sending down Jose Hernandez and calling up right-hander Ben Heller, who has big league experience with the Yankees and Braves.
Other moves included transferring starting pitcher Marco Gonzalez from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day list. Catcher Jason Delay ended his rehab assignment in Bradenton and was optioned to Indianapolis, where he had two hits last night. Catcher Grant Koch was designated for assignment.
Game two of the series could be another duel on the mound. Paul Skenes [2-0, 2.45 ERA] face Dodgers lefty James Paxton [5-0, 3.29 ERA}. It’s a 6:15 airtime, 6:40 first pitch on WCCS.
MLB
One of Major League Baseball’s best stories this season has been the stellar performance of former Pirate Trevor Williams. He’s 5-0 with a 2.22 ERA, but the right-hander has landed on the 15-day injured list with a flexor muscle strain in his right forearm.
ALTOONA CURVE
Bubba Chandler was outstanding but took the loss as Altoona dropped a 1-0 decision to Richmond. Chandler tossed five innings and gave up one unearned run, striking out five.
Game two of the series is tonight in Richmond with Anthony Solometo on the mound for the Curve.
