The Pitt Panthers opened the basketball season with a very disappointing loss to The Citadel, 78-63 as Bulldogs freshman guard Jason Roche scored 27 points and hit eight three-pointers in his first college game.
The Citadel, which was picked in the preseason coaches poll to finish 9th out of 10 teams in the Southern Conference, dominated the Panthers, scored 27 points in the first eight minutes of the game, and Pitt could not recover.
John Hugley scored 27 points for Pitt and Femi Odukale added 20.
Coach Jeff Capel says the Citadel was just better in all phases of the game.
Capel says the Panthers have a lot of work to do.
It won’t get any easier for Pitt. They play the Backyard Brawl game at West Virginia on Friday.
