The Steelers struggled again last night, but Chris Boswell’s 40-yard field goal with 26 seconds to play gave them a 29-27 win over the Chicago Bears at Heinz Field. It was the fourth straight win for Mike Tomlin’s team and it was Tomlin’s 150th career win, passing Bill Cowher for second place on the Steelers’ all-time wins list and putting Tomlin in 20th place all-time in the NFL.
The Steelers surrendered a 14-point third quarter lead, giving up three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and trailing by a point before Ben Roethlisberger led a 52-yard drive that set up Boswell’s game-winning kick. It was Big Ben’s 50th career game-winning drive, tying him with Tom Brady for third all-time.
Tomlin joked that the Steelers “had it all the way” in the win, but credited his offense for getting the job done at the end.
Tomlin was not pleased with the number of mistakes his team made, especially on special teams, where they fumbled a punt return that was returned for a touchdown, and they missed an extra point.
Tomlin reflected on his milestone win.
In addition to his game-winning field goal, Boswell kicked field goals from 52 and 54 yards and he recovered a Bears fumble on a kickoff, taking a big hit for the second week in a row. He said he was fine, and he also said the field goal for the win was no big deal for him as a kicker.
Roethlisberger says the Bears comeback shows you can never relax in a football game, even until the final play when Chicago missed on a 65-yard field goal attempt.
Roethlisberger was 21-of-30 passing for 205 yards and two touchdowns. Najee Harris led the Steelers in rushing with 62 yards on 22 carries. TJ Watt had three sacks for the Steelers, bringing him to 11-and-a-half for the season.
The only injury that appeared to be concerning to the Steelers was when wide receiver Chase Claypool limped off the field with what appeared to be a groin injury. He returned briefly but did not have any catches after the injury. Claypool caught three passes on the night and ran the ball twice. Wideouts James Washington and Diontae Johnson also had two rushes each for the Steelers.
Next up for the Steelers is a game Sunday afternoon at Heinz Field against the Detroit Lions.
