At a news conference in Harrisburg tomorrow, State Representative Jim Struzzi and fellow Republican representatives Clint Owlett and Eric Nelson will announce the introduction of House Bill 2044, a measure which they are co-sponsoring to prevent private outside money from being inequitably distributed to influence the outcome of an election.
The bill would prohibit all county election officials and the Secretary of the Commonwealth from accepting private contributions and donations that are designated for the administration of elections.
The legislation is scheduled to be voted on by the State Government Committee prior to the 10:30 AM news conference. It grew out of House Appropriations Committee hearing on the 2020 elections, which found that outside money, including millions of dollars from Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, were donated and distributed to select counties and to the Wolf Administration and were overwhelmingly distributed only to counties which favored the donors’ political preferences.
