When Justin Fields was acquired by the Steelers in March, special teams coach Danny Smith hinted that he could possibly return kickoffs in the regular season. Fields, however, debunked those rumors following OTAs yesterday at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.
Fields told reporters quote, “everybody kind of misinterpreted it wrong,” and that Smith was trying to send a message that anyone could be used on special teams. He also indicated that returning kicks was a joke and that social media took things out of control.
The Steelers yesterday signed tight end Izaiah Gathings to a one-year contract. Gathings spent time on the Jets and Chiefs but never saw any playing time. He went to college at Middle Tennessee State and posted 559 yards and two touchdowns in his senior season.
