In the opening game of their best-of-three Youth Legion championship series last night, Armstrong topped Brookville, 11-1, breaking open a 1-1 tie with three runs in the 4th inning and seven in the 5th to end the game and take a 1-0 series lead. Caleb Harriger and Jesse Hepler each had two hits and two RBI for Armstrong and Garrett Kelley added two hits. Zack Streightif pitched all five innings, striking out two for the win. Game Two is at Brookville tonight.
The Youth Legion Regional Tournament opens next weekend at First Commonwealth Bank Field in Homer City, which will be very busy over the next three weekends. This Saturday, it will host one of four Senior American Legion Division 2 Sub-Regionals. Then on Sunday, the tam with the best record from Saturday will play the winner of the Somerset Sub-Regional This is a new concept being tried by the American Legion for smaller school recruitment areas that field Senior American Legion Baseball and it may lead to changes for both Senior and Youth Legion as early as next year, with classifications similar to the PIAA’s playoff classes.
In the Sr. Legion Sub-Regional in Homer City on Saturday, there will be three teams playing in a three-game round-robin tournament.
The schedule for Saturday is:
1 PM Marion Center vs. Curwensville
4 PM Portage vs. Curwensville
7 PM Marion Center vs. Portage
Sunday’s action featuring the team with best record on Saturday against the winner from the Somerset Division 2 Sub-Regional will begin at 2 PM.
The Homer City Area Athletic Booster Club will be hosting the PA Youth American Legion Western Regional Tournament July 22nd through the 26th, with the State Championship Tournament a week later.
