Homer-Center battled hard for a five-set win over West Branch in the District 6 Class A volleyball semifinals. The Wildcats will advance to the final against Bishop Guilfoyle.
Third-seed Homer-Center won the first two sets, 25-18 and 26-24, but dropped the next two, 25-23 and 25-22, before taking the final set, 15-11. Macy Sardone had 45 assists, Bela Bence had 15 service points. Meegan Williams had 20 kills, Marlee Kochman had 11 kills and 14 blocks, Gabi Page had eight kills and 22 blocks; Mya Fatula and Anna Cutshall had a shared 36 digs. Ashlyn Kerr had the game-winning ace in game five.
Top-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle dealt No. 4 West Shamokin a hard-fought 3-2 loss in the other semi.
The Wolves took the first set, and the Marauders the second. West Shamokin won the third set but Guilfoyle took the fourth, setting up the final showdown. West Shamokin fell behind early but came back to take a 6-6 lead. They still lead, 15-14, but the Marauders scored the next three points to win the final set, 17-15, and clinch the match.
For West Shamokin, Maddie McConnell had 19 kills; Kexine Young had 11; Jarah Huth had nine kills and seven blocks; Molly Kaplon had 40 assists.
With their wins, both Homer-Center and Bishop Guilfoyle qualify for the state tournament. The winner Saturday will play the number two teams out of the WPIAL. Saturday’s losing team will play the number one team from District 10.
