With the baseball season officially entering the offseason, Major League teams are starting to fire up the hot stove. Three Pirates became free agents yesterday. Pitchers Trevor Cahill and Shelby Miller are on the market, as is slugger Yoshi Tsutsugo, whom General Manager Ben Cherington says he wants to re-sign.
The Bucs claimed right-handed pitcher Erin Hanhold off waivers from the Orioles yesterday. He gave up eight runs in just 10-and-a-third innings for the O’s and spent most of the season at Triple-A.
The Phillies yesterday declined a club option on Andrew McCutchen, making the former Pirates’ All-Star and NL MVP a free agent. Cutch hit only .222 this season but did slug 27 home runs and drove in 80 runners.
BetOnline.ag set the odds for the Pirates winning next year’s World Series at 100-to-1 yesterday. Only three teams have longer odds: The Diamondbacks, Orioles, and Rangers.
Giants catcher Buster Posey is retiring at age 34 after 12 seasons, all with San Francisco. The three-time World Series champion was NL Rookie of the Year in 2010. He was the NL Comeback Player of the Year and league MVP in 2012 after suffering a badly broken ankle in 2011.
Posey hit .304 with 18 home runs and 56 RBI this season after returning from hip surgery. He is a lifetime .302 hitter with 158 home runs and 729 RBIs. He is walking away from $22 million guaranteed for next season after the Giants announced they would pick up his option for the next season.
