49 heroes were honored with flags placed along Oakland Avenue near Oakland Cemetery, with each hero receiving a medallion that will be placed on the flagpole. Event chairperson Monica Jones said it was not only important to honor the traditional heroes of military and first responders, but the everyday heroes like parents and teachers.
Also honored was Payton Balogh, who was the victim in a firery car crash on Airport Road in 2020 that left her in a coma for three months. While some considered her a hero, she took the opportunity to honor those who saved her that that day. She talked with us about why she felt it was important to honor her heroes, which were members of the Indiana Fire Association, including Matt Martin.
