BASEBALL
The WPIAL baseball playoffs continue tonight for Indiana, which plays upset-minded Blackhawk at North Allegheny High School at 7 o’clock. You’ll hear the game on WDAD starting at 6:45.
Blackhawk is the 16th seed in Class 4A but they knocked off top seed Belle Vernon last Wednesday, 7-3. The Cougars are 8-10 while Indiana comes into the game at 10-9 and off a dominating pitching performance by Greg Minnick and Ben Ryan. Minnick struck out 12 in five shutout innings of a 4-1 win over Central Valley.
Coach Dan Petroff says he knows Blackhawk will be a challenge.
Petroff expects Blackhawk to throw Dylan Smith, who they faced in a 4-1 Indiana win in last year’s WPIAL playoffs. They scored 2 runs off Smith in 5 innings.
Petroff says the WPIAL 4A bracket is loaded with good baseball teams, Blackhawk included.
The District 6 baseball playoff brackets are pretty quiet today. Most of the action happens on Thursday. There is one game today involving a Heritage Conference team. In Class A, number 7 Portage takes on second-seeded Blacklick Valley.
SOFTBALL
The District 6 softball bracket is loaded with action today. In Class A, number 6 Penns Manor plays at number 3 Claysburg-Kimmel.
In Double-A, third-seeded Marion Center will host number 6 Cambria Heights in an all-Heritage Conference game. You’ll hear that one on WDAD beginning at 3:45.
Number two West Shamokin will host number seven Mount Union. Northern Cambria visits top seed Bald Eagle, and 5th-seeded Penns Valley is at number four Southern Huntingdon.
One other Heritage Conference team is in action today. Number eight River Valley plays at top seed Forest Hills.
