The Pirates’ Bailey Falter was outstanding on the mound, but David Bednar’s struggles continued as the All-Star closer surrendered the winning run on a disputed call in the bottom of the 9th inning against the Cubs. Joe Block reports.
On the game-winning play at the plate, the replay appeared to show that catcher Joey Bart made the tag on the sliding Cody Bellinger, then as Bart transferred the ball to his right hand to show the umpire that he’d made the tag, Bellinger knocked it out of his hand. The Pirates challenged the call, and the MLB review in New York confirmed it, ending the game.
The series concludes this afternoon with Mitch Keller (4-3, 3.93 ERA) pitching for the Pirates against former Pirates top draft pick Jameson Taillon (3-1, 1.61 ERA).
