A bill supported by State Representative Jim Struzzi aimed at helping to protect volunteers is making its way to the House floor.
On Wednesday, the State House Tourism and Recreational Development Committee unanimously passed House Bill 1694, which would protect volunteers and volunteer organizations from litigation and limited liability. These same protections are currently offered to those who make portions of their property available to the public for recreational purposes.
Struzzi hopes that the bill would encourage more people to volunteer “by removing what some potential good stewards may consider a barrier when it comes to getting more involved in their community.” He added that the volunteer groups that take care of outdoor venues are important, and deserve the same protections that the landowners have.
Struzzi is one of four prime co-sponsors on the bill. Struzzi also said that he has received support for the bill from members on both sides of the aisle, and feels it will head to Governor Wolf for his signature soon.
