Today marks the third anniversary of the shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh that killed eleven people and wounded six more.
The Tree of Life Synagogue has remained closed since the shooting on October 27th of 2018. In-person events are being held today to memorialize those who were killed and injured in the shooting. The man accused in the shooting, 49-year-old Robert Bowers, was shot and taken into custody, charged with federal and state crimes including hate crimes and homicide.
In the wake of the third anniversary of the shooting, Governor Tom Wolf is calling on the state legislature to take action against gun violence. Some of the measures he wants to see passed include measures to temporarily take guns away from people who might harm themselves and others, require stolen guns to be reported stolen within 72 hours, improve safe gun storage requirements, and close loopholes in the state’s background check system.
