On a night when he didn’t have his best stuff, Jared Jones still led the way to a Pirates win in their series opener in Chicago. Joe Block has the story.
Pirates manager Derek Shelton says Jones showed he’s a good young pitcher by giving him 6 innings when he was having command issues.
Shelton says the Pirates’ offense focused on having good at-bats.
Nick Gonzalez has given the Pirates a boost since his promotion last week from Indianapolis. He says his offensive game is coming together.
Gonzalez says the entire Pirates lineup is gaining consistency.
In the second game of the series today, Paul Skenes makes his second start of the season, after he faced the Cubs last Saturday and gave up 3 runs in 4 innings. He will be opposed by Cubs right-hander Kyle Hendricks, who is 0-3 with a 10.04 ERA. Hendricks gave up one run in 5 innings against the Pirates last Sunday.
Once considered one of baseball’s best young pitching prospects, Roansy Contreras is now a member of the Los Angeles Angels after the Pirates traded him yesterday for cash considerations. Contreras has outstanding stuff, but the Pirates couldn’t harness it and turn him into the pitcher he was expected to become. He was designated for assignment last week when Paul Skenes was added to the major league roster.
Checking in with Indianapolis, Henry Davis was 3-for-4 with a home run last night in an 8-6 Indy loss as they split a doubleheader with Toledo. In the second game, a 5-3 win, Davis was 0-for-3. Veteran Jake Lamb was 2-for-4 in the first game and 1-for-3 in the second game and is hitting .364.
